Box Score Junior Brett Sanders (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) and senior Brendan Swayne (Seaford, NY/Plainedge) had three hits each and Sanders added three runs batted in leading The College at Brockport Baseball team to a convincing 15-3 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win over Oneonta in the first of a three-game series Sunday night at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse.
Brockport (8-6 Overall, 1-3 SUNYAC) won its first SUNYAC game of the season three runs in the second inning to take a lead and then after building a 5-3 advantage, exploded for seven runs in the eighth inning to break open the game. The Golden Eagles added three in the ninth for the final score.
In the second inning, Lou Mastellone (Glen Head, NY/North Shore) reached base on a fielding error with one out and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Swayne connected on a two-out single to left field to score Mastellone and Anthony Barbetto (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) followed reacing base on another Oneonta (3-7, 0-1) error extending the inning. Sanders laced a single to center field scoring both Swayne and Barbetto giving Brockport the early 3-1 lead.
Oneonta got one back in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-2 but the Golden Eagles added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings for the 5-2 lead.
In the fifth, Chris Davis (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) was hit by pitch to start the inning, stole second and came home on a Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) triple. In the sixth, Swayne started the inning with a single, stole second and took third on a ground out. He scored on a passed ball one batter later.
Oneonta trimmed the lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh but the Golden Eagles broke the game open in the eighth with a seven-run inning.
Barbetto reached on a fielder's choice and an error by the catcher allowed Drew DeBlasiis (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) to score from third. Greg Ruddy (Troy, NY/Troy) scored on a wild pitch and Swayne scored on a single by Sanders for an 8-3 lead.
After a pitching change, Josh Martin (Depew, NY/Depew) singled home Barbetto. Sanders came around to score on an infield out, Luke Gilbert (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) stole home and Dan D'Eletto (Walworth, NY/Wayne) scored on a DeBlasiis single to make it a 12-3 Brockport lead.
In the ninth, Barbetto and Jake Kenney (Hornell, NY/Alfred-Almond) each scored on bases loaded walks and Gilbert scored on a wild pitch to end the scoring for Brockport.
Swayne was 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Sanders was 3-for-4 with a run and three runs batted in.
Dakota Stackhouse (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) started and threw five innings allowing an earned run on five hits and striking out five for the win.
Tyler Clifford (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) and
Nick Pontari (Troy, NY/Troy) threw two innings each of relief combining for four strikeouts to finish out the game.
