Juniors Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) and Chris Davis (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) along with senior Sean Geisel ( Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) had three hits each as The College at Brockport Baseball team opened the 2015 season with a split of the two games on opening day Saturday at JP Ridell Stadium in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Brockport (1-1) dropped the opening game 7-3 to Frostburg State and then rebounded to post a 5-4 win over Wesley College in the nightcap.

Burghardt was 2-for-4 with a pair of singles in the opener and then singled home a run in the first inning of the second game for his three hits on the day. He finished the day 3-for-8 with two runs batted in. Davis had a base hit in the ninth inning of the opener and then had a pair of hits and scored twice in the 5-4 win over Wesley. Geisel was 2-for-4 in the first game and added a 1-for-3 with one runs scored effort in the nightcap.

Jeffrey Prouse (Eden, ONT/Glendale) picked up the pitching victory in game two with 5 1/3 innings of work allowing just one earned run and struck out four batters. Nick Pontari (Troy, NY/Troy) had 1 1/3 innings of relief without allowing a run and striking out three while Adam Pratt (Batavia, NY/Batavia) earned the save.

Against Frostburg (7-0), the Golden Eagles scored first in the top of the third inning. Anthony Barbetto (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) hit a one-out single and then moved into scoring position with a stolen base and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Jake Kenney (Hornell, NY/Alfred –Almond) followed with a walk before Burghardt singled through the left side of the infield to score Barbetto with the first run of the year.

Frostburg responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning and scored two more in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead and made it 5-1 an inning later.

Brockport trimmed the lead with a run in the seventh as Greg Ruddy (Troy, NY/Troy) led off the inning with a walk, took second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a Barbetto ground out to the right side of the infield. Ruddy scored one batter later as Kenney lifted a sacrifice fly to right field.

Brockport threatened again in the eighth inning. Geisel led off the inning with a single and Brendan Swayne (Seaford, NY/Plainedge) was hit by pitch putting runners on first and second. With Timothy Segrue (Mendon, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) with the plate with no outs, Frostburg picked off the runner at second and then threw out Swayne trying to steal second on consecutive pitches to end the threat.

The Bobcats added a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth to increase their lead and Brockport scored once in the ninth for the final margin.

In the nightcap, Brockport opened the scoring with the first run in the bottom of the first. Barbetto opened the inning with a walk and took second on a wild pitch and third on a ground out before scoring on a Burghardt single.

Wesley (0-1) tied the game in the fourth inning with a lead-off double followed by a single to make it a 1-1 game.

The Golden Eagles regained the lead in the bottom of the inning pushing across two runs. Davis opened the inning beating out an infield single and Geisel followed with a walk. A wild pitch allowed Davis to take third and he scored on Swayne's fielder's choice. Swayne later scored on a fielder's choice play by John Craig (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa).

Wesley cut the lead in half in the fifth with an unearned run after an error to start the frame.

Brockport regained control in the sixth with two more runs. Davis started the rally with a one out single down the right field line and Geisel followed with nearly the same hit down the line putting runners on first and second. Both runners moved up with a wild pitch and Swayne walked to load the bases. Designated hitter Josh Martin (Depew, NY/Depew) singled to centerfield to score two runners and Brockport led 5-2.

The lead appeared safe until the eighth inning when Wesley rallied for a pair of runs to cut the lead to 5-4 before Pratt came out of the bullpen to stop the rally and then finished off the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning as the Golden Eagles held on for the first victory of the season.
