Box Score 2 The College at Brockport Baseball team emerged victorious in both hard fought State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) games during Sunday's doubleheader against Plattsburgh behind the bats of shortstop Greg Ruddy (Troy, NY/Troy) and right fielder Brendan Swayne (Seaford, NY/Plainedge). The Golden Eagles won the first contest in walk-off fashion 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning before pulling out a 10-6 victory in game two on the afternoon at Clark V. Whited Complex on the campus of Brockport.
Ruddy played all 16 innings at shortstop while finishing each game with a couple of hits while Swayne had quite the day at the plate finishing the doubleheader with five hits, five runs and three runs batted in.
Brockport (13-10, 6-7 SUNYAC) was shutout in the first game of the series against Plattsburgh on Saturday and started the first game on Sunday a bit sluggish with two quick one-two-three innings.
Things began to change in the top of the third as freshman Luke Gilbert (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) got the first hit of the game for Brockport before getting caught attempting to steal second base. Regardless Swayne reached base on an error before advancing to second on a walk by Anthony Barbetto (New City, NY/Clarkstown). Brett Sanders (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) knocked in Swayne with a base hit through the left side that tied the game 1-1.
The Golden Eagles took the lead in the fourth inning after Chris Davis (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) advanced to third on a double by Josh Martin (Depew, NY/Depew). The Cardinal pitcher threw a wild pitch that allowed Davis to race home for the 2-1 lead before Martin scored on the following pitch after the catcher overthrew the third baseman attempting to nab Martin at third.
Brockport pitcher Jeffrey Prouse (Eden, ONT/Glendale) continued to cruise through the Plattsburgh offense allowing only a single runner in the fourth through sixth inning. Prouse lost control in the seventh inning, hitting back-to-back batters before walking the third to load the bases. Nick Pontari (Troy, NY/Troy) came in to relieve Prouse, getting the first Cardinal batter to hit a shallow fly to leftfield that did not allow the runners to advance. However the second batter sent a ball just over the right field fence to give Plattsburgh the 5-3 lead. Pontari closed out the inning with no more damage allowed.
The Green and Gold faced a loss if they did not rally in the seventh and final inning of the contest. Swayne got things started with a one out single down the left field line. Â Barbetto hit a grounder to the right side of the field and reached on an error by the second baseman. Sanders grounded to the shortstop in a potential inning ending double play but raced down the line panicking the second baseman into an errant throw that scored Swayne.
Ruddy kept the inning alive with an infield single that put the winning runner on base. Eli Carrera (Rochester, NY/Franklin) pinch hit and responded with a clutch two out rbi single up the middle that tied the game and allowed Ruddy to advance to third. Davis then hit a hard grounder on the left side of the infield that the shortstop could not handle to give the Golden Eagles the walk-off 6-5 win.
The Golden Eagles offense proved much more potent in game two, starting things off with three runs in the third inning. Swayne singled up the middle before advancing to second on a groundball out. He was plated by Ruddy who also singled up the middle before Sanders reached on an error by the right fielder. Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) drilled a ball to deep right center field that sent both runners around the bases and a 3-0 Brockport lead.
Shawn Peake (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) started a three run fourth inning for Brockport with a leadoff walk before some timely hitting by Swayne, Ruddy and Sanders sent runners across the plate, helping the Golden Eagles to a 6-2 lead.
Brockport neutralized a two run fifth by the Cardinals with two runs of its own after Swayne knocked in Justin LaRosa (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) and Carrera with a two out single.
Another two run Plattsburgh inning was cancelled out by runs batted in from Ruddy and Sanders in the eighth inning, making the score 10-6 going into the top of the ninth. The Cardinals threatened in the ninth with the bases loaded but right handed reliever Seve Kowalski (Franklin Springs, NY/Clinton) nailed down the save when he snagged a hard grounder up the middle before flipping it to the first baseman for the final out.
Zack Lander (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) pitched an effective five and one third innings working around several Cardinal hits and walks to pick up his fourth win of the season. Lander finished the game with four strikeouts.
The next game for the Golden Eagles is scheduled on Wednesday at home against St. John Fisher at 4 pm. Remember to stay tuned for any schedule changes by checking out www.GoBrockport.com and following Brockport's mascot Ellsworth on twitter @EllsworthEagle.
