Box Score Sophomore Kelly Wall (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) scored three goals in the second half to spark a late rally for The College at Brockport Women's Lacrosse team but it wasn't enough as they dropped a non-conference game to St. John Fisher 14-13 Thursday afternoon at Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium.
Brockport (7-5 overall, 3-2 conference) found itself in a four goal deficit early in the second half after giving up six straight goals to St. John Fisher (9-4) stretching back to nine minutes remaining in the first half. Wall snapped the Cardinals streak at the 26:36 mark when she received a pass from junior Makensie Schuber (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) and beat the goalie up top.
The game was scoreless for ten minutes until St. John Fisher tallied a goal to take a 13-9 lead with just less than 15 minutes remaining in the game. Wall scored two straight unassisted goals four minutes apart to put a spark in the Golden Eagles offense. With just over five minutes remaining, Schuber drove to the net and sent the ball past the goalie to make it a one goal game.
A Brockport yellow card proved costly as St. John Fisher scored a man up goal to increase their lead to two goals with four minutes left. With under two minutes to go, senior Nina Tassone (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) beat the goalie down low after rushing through two defenders to make the score 14-13 but Brockport's rally fell short.
The game started off quick as nine goals were scored in the first ten minutes of play. During that stretch Tassone tallied a goal with an assist from Wall while Schuber and junior Keeley Rice (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) each scored an unassisted goal. Freshman Andrea Zlinsky (Owego, NY/Owego Free Academy) tied the game at four after bouncing a shot between the goalies legs off of a free position.
After giving up a goal one minute later, Brockport went on a three goal streak over the next two and a half minutes to take a 7-5 lead. Junior Ciara McKeon (Westhampton, NY/Westhampton Beach) won a draw control and took the ball to the net herself to tie the game at five. Wall won the ensuing draw control and passed the ball to Rice who found freshman Jessica Boddery (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) in front of the goal who scored.
On Brockport's next possession, Schuber earned a free position shot. She quickly shot the ball, picked up her own rebound, and shot the ball again this time finding the back of the net and giving Brockport a 7-5 lead, their largest lead of the game. St. John Fisher closed the first half with four straight goals to take a 10-6 lead to halftime.
Five Golden Eagles tallied multiple points in the loss. Scuber and Wall each finished with three goals and one assist. Tassone and Boddery recorded two goals each while Rice tallied one goal and two assists.
The Golden Eagles host Oswego this Saturday in a conference matchup starting at 1 pm. Brockport's seniors will be honored prior to the start of the game.
