Box Score 2 Senior Brendan Swayne (Seaford, NY/Plainedge) was a terror for Medaille on the bases in game one of a non-conference doubleheader split on Saturday afternoon as Derick Fera (Lyons, NY/Lyons) pitched The College at Brockport Baseball team to an 8-1 victory at Clark V. Whited Complex.
Brockport (14-13, 6-7 SUNYAC) won game one but fell in extra innings during game two, losing 3-2 with the game tying runner in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth.
Fera pitched a brilliant first game going the distance striking out two while only giving up eight hits and one run in seven innings pitched. He was helped to an early lead by the bat of Zack Lander (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) in the first inning.
The Golden Eagles led the inning off with back to back hits as Greg Ruddy (Troy, NY/Troy) led the game off with a bunt single before Swayne singled through the left side of the infield. After both runners took off on a pitch allowing them to advance on a ground out, Lander sent a pitch deep into left center field on a line scoring both players to give Brockport a 2-0 lead.
Swayne led the third inning off with a hit up the middle and advanced to second and third on back to back passed balls before Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) added to his team leading RBI total with a sacrifice fly.
Swayne once again was involved in Brockport's biggest inning of the day as the team scored three runs in the fourth. Lou Mastellone (Glen Head, NY/North Shore) hit a one out single which was followed by fly ball caught by the left fielder before recording his first career stolen base in his four seasons of service for the Golden Eagles. Swayne hit a soaring fly ball to center field that was caught in the swirling winds and dropped by the center fielder as he strode underneath the path of the ball, allowing Mastellone to score. Swayne advanced to second on a passed ball and stole third, putting himself 90 feet away from another Golden Eagle run.
Burghardt and Lander walked to load the bases before the Mavericks made a pitching change. Shawn Peake (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) lined a ball to the outfield that sent both Swayne and Burghardt in to give Brockport a 6-0 advantage.
Fera worked around three straight singles in the sixth inning to only allow one run as he caused the next three batters to all hit ground balls. Brockport held a 7-1 lead before tacking on the final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth.
In game two, Brockport dug itself an early hole trailing 2-0 after the opening half of the first inning. The Golden Eagles were held scoreless for five innings before Anthony Barbetto (New City, NY/Clarkstown) led the inning off by reaching second base on a throwing error from the shortstop. Two batters later, John Craig (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) sent Barbetto racing for home with a single to right field.
Dan D'Eletto (Walworth, NY/Wayne) pinch ran for Craig, and his speed made the Medaille pitcher worrisome as he tried to pick off D'Eletto only to bounce the ball by the first baseman allowing the runner to advance to second. Jake Kenney (Hornell, NY/Alfred-Almond) drove a ball into the gap for a double that easily tied the game at 2-2.
Nick Jerolimov (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa), Kyle Perez (Oswego, NY/Oswego), Kevin Harman (Penfield, NY/Penfield) and Seve Kowalski (Franklin Springs, NY/Clinton) combined to throw seven straight innings of scoreless relief for Brockport starting from the third through the eighth inning.
The Golden Eagles gave up a single run in the ninth inning and trailed 3-2. Freshman Drew DeBlasiis (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) lined a one out single down the left field line and stole second base to give Brockport a scoring opportunity to tie the game, however two fly balls later Brockport was left with a split on Saturday.
Brockport hits the road during the week before returning home on the weekend for a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) series against New Paltz on Friday and Saturday. Friday's game is scheduled for 3 pm with a doubleheader to be played on Saturday starting at noon which will also mark the baseball team senior day celebration.
