Box Score The College at Brockport Baseball team rallied for four runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-4 lead but gave up four runs in the sixth to fall to Rochester Institute of Technology 8-7 Wednesday afternoon at the Clark V. Whited Sports Complex in a non-conference game.
Brockport (19-15) loaded the bases with one out in the fifth after junior Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) was hit by a pitch, junior Chris Davis (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) hit a single through the left side, and senior John Craig (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) drew a walk. Junior Eli Carrera (Rochester, NY/Franklin) stepped up to the plate and hit a groundball towards second base which was fielded by the shortstop who made a throwing error attempting to throw out Burghardt at home. Burghardt and Davis scored on the play giving Brockport a 5-4 lead.
With runners on second and third, freshman Jack Wallwork (Geneva, NY/Geneva) drove in pinch runner Timothy Segrue (Mendon, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) as Wallwork reached first base on a fielding error by the second baseman. Senior Sean Geisel (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) dug in with runners on the corners and ripped a single up the middle, scoring Carrera to extend Brockport's lead to 7-4.
The Tigers answered back with four runs in the top of the sixth to regain a one run lead. RIT would hold on for the 8-7 win as Brockport was able to get only one baserunner in the final four innings.
The Golden Eagles quickly found themselves in a 4-0 deficit after the first inning but responded with three runs in the second to cut RIT's lead to one. Carrera led off the inning with a single through the right side and would advance to third after two straight ground outs. Senior Brendan Swayne (Seaford, NY/Plainedge) hit an infield single allowing Carrera to score. After stealing second, Swayne scored as junior Brett Sanders (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) ripped a single up the middle. Sanders followed Swayne's lead by stealing second and scoring on a single up the middle from senior Anthony Barbetto (New City, NY/Clarkstown).
Carrera finished one-for-three at the plate while driving in two runs and scoring two runs himself. Davis was the only Golden Eagle to record multiple hits as he went two-for-five with one run scored. Junior Adam Pratt (Batavia, NY/Batavia) struck out five in two and one thirds innings of relief. Junior Kyle Perez (Oswego, NY/Oswego) suffered his first loss of the season.
The Golden Eagles head to Cortland this weekend for the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tournament. Brockport earned the number three seed and will face the number two seed Oswego at 3:30 pm Friday in Cortland.
