Box Score 2 Senior Anthony Barbetto (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) scored the lone two runs for The College at Brockport Baseball team as they fell to State University of New York Athletic Conference opponent Cortland in a 3-2 extra inning loss in game two after a 5-4 loss in game one of the double header Friday afternoon at Hoy Field on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.
In game one, Brockport (10-8 overall, 3-5 SUNYAC) got the bats going quickly as they scored two runs off of three hits in the first inning. Junior Brett Sanders (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) hit a single to center field then advanced to third on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt. The next batter, junior Josh Martin (Depew, NY/Depew), ripped a single up the middle scoring Sanders.
Two batters later, with runners on first and second, junior Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) hit a ground ball to the third basemen who stepped on third for an out before making a throwing error that allowed junior Chris Davis (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) to score. Cortland (18-1, 5-0) came back with three runs off of four hits in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead after one.
Strong pitching from both teams silenced everyone's bats as the next four innings went scoreless. Brockport and Cortland had a combined three hits during the stretch.
In the top of the sixth inning Martin drew a walk with one out. Davis hit a single to centerfield and a fielding error allowed Martin to score and tie the game at three. In the bottom of the inning Cortland scored one run to take back the lead.
Back-to-back singles and a passed ball allowed Brockport to have runners on second and third with no outs in the top of the seventh inning. Junior Greg Ruddy (Troy, NY/Troy) scored on a groundout from senior Brendan Swayne (Seaford, NY/Plainedge) to tie the game at four. Three singles in the bottom of the eighth allowed Cortland to take 5-4 lead as they held on for the win.
Senior Jeffrey Prouse (Eden, ONT/Glendale) pitched seven innings and struck out five batters. Senior Nick Pontari (Troy, NY/Troy) gave up one earned run in his second loss of the season. Sanders finished game one three-for-four at the plate while Davis finished two-for-four.
Game two of the double header started with another pitcher's duel as Cortland was the first team to score in the bottom of the fourth inning. Brockport answered back in the top of the sixth inning as Barbetto hit a leadoff double to left center. Sanders laid down a bunt and reached on a fielding error that advanced Barbetto to third. Burghardt hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Barbetto and tied the game at one. With the game regularly scheduled for seven innings of play, Brockport and Cortland headed to extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Barbetto led off the inning with a single to right center and advanced on to second a sacrifice bunt from Sanders. Davis crushed the ball to right field, scoring Barbetto and giving Brockport a 2-1 lead. Cortland answered back with one run in the bottom of the inning to take the game into the ninth.
Three scoreless innings took the game into the twelfth inning. Brockport was unable to get their bats going in the final four innings of the game as they only had two batters reach first. Cortland scored in the bottom of the twelfth after a triple with one out to take the 3-2 victory.
Brockport will conclude its series with Cortland on Sunday April 5 at Cornell at 2:30 pm.
