Box Score The College at Brockport Baseball team got some revenge against Oswego for a previous series sweep by putting the Lakers on the brink of elimination following the Golden Eagles 8-7 win in its first game of the double elimination style State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) playoffs.
Brockport's (20-15) bats were as hot as the sun is bright finishing the game with 17 hits as Greg Ruddy (Troy, NY/Troy), Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango), John Craig (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) and Jake Kenney (Hornell, NY/Alfred-Almond) all finished the game with three hits apiece as Ruddy led the Green and Gold with three runs batted in.
Athlete of the Week Jeffrey Prouse (Eden, ONT/Glendale) and Dakota Stackhouse (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) combined enough effective innings to hold the potent Laker offense in check. Prouse pitched into the sixth inning before getting into some trouble.
Stackhouse entered the game with two outs in the bottom of the sixth giving up a single that appeared to have put the Lakers within a single score. However the Golden Eagles appealed the play at third base and the base runner was ruled out having not touched the bag.
Brockport had 11 at bats in the fifth inning as the offense sprung to life and claimed the lead following a fourth inning run that tied the score at 2-2. Five straight batters reached base in the fifth as Burghardt led off with a single, followed by a Chris Davis (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) walk and a single by Craig sent Burghardt racing for home where he was gunned out by the left fielder.
Eli Carrera (Rochester, NY/Franklin) and Kenney both singled as the runners were only able to advance a single base each time. Kenney's hit knocked in one run putting the Golden Eagles ahead 3-2 before a walk by Brendan Swayne (Seaford, NY/Plainedge) pushed the lead up another run.
The next batter Anthony Barbetto (New City, NY/Clarkstown) hit the ball sharply towards the gap at first base, but the first baseman made a diving stop and got Barbetto out at first. The sharply hit ball by Barbetto tacked on another run as Brockport took a 5-2 advantage.
Two more runs scored when Ruddy sent a ball down the left field line and hustled his way to third for a triple and he scored on the very next pitch as Brett Sanders (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) singled to the right center gap giving Brockport the distinct advantage of a six run lead with a score of 8-2.
To the Lakers credit, they did not give up as they battled back from the large deficit. However the Golden Eagles prevailed as Stackhouse proved resilient through the remaining three and a third innings picking up the only save of his season.
Craig and Kenney led the team in runs scored with two apiece as Carrera and Davis also chipped in multiple hits as well for Brockport.
The Golden Eagles and tournament host Red Dragons of Cortland will play each other tomorrow as both teams won their games today to set up a duel between the only SUNYAC team to beat Cortland this season. The game is set for 1:00 pm with the winner advancing to the SUNYAC Championship and the loser left to play for a chance at redemption in the double elimination playoff system.
