Box Score 2 The College at Brockport dropped two consecutive games Saturday afternoon in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament of the double elimination playoff style to Cortland and Oswego to be excluded from the championship game at Cortland. Brockport was pitted against Cortland in its first game of the day in the winners-bracket losing 8-1 before getting eliminated with an 11-4 loss to Oswego.
Brockport (20-17) was one day removed from an offensive onslaught on Oswego that saw the Golden Eagles combine for 17 hits before struggling to get anything going against Cortland on Saturday. Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) broke up the Red Dragons no-hit bid in the ninth inning with a double and scored the lone Brockport run when John Craig (Clifton Park, NY/Shenedehowa) singled a batter later.
Against Oswego, the Golden Eagles took the momentary lead following a walk by Shawn Peake (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and a sacrifice bunt by Jack Wallwork (Geneva, NY/Geneva) advanced him to second. Peake scored after two failed pick off attempts were errantly thrown away.
The Lakers responded quickly with six hits and five runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the 5-1 lead. Brockport chipped away at the lead when Chris Davis (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) doubled in Anthony Barbetto (New City, NY/Clarkstown) who led the fourth inning off with a single before speeding around the bases on Davis' hit.
The fourth inning run was neutralized by another Oswego home run in the bottom half of the inning. The deficit grew to 11-2 in the seventh when Oswego scored five runs off of five hits.
Brockport's attempt at a rally fell short in the ninth with two runs scored. Following a flyout, Sean Geisel (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) and Peake singled back-to-back times before a pop up. Brendan Swayne (Seaford, NY/Plainedge) walked to load the bases. Peake and Swayne were pinch ran for by Kevin Harman (Penfield, NY/Penfield) and Luke Gilbert (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool). Greg Ruddy (Troy, NY/Troy) hit a two out ground ball towards the third baseman that eluded the fielders glove and scored Geisel and Harman.
Cortland and Oswego will play for the SUNYAC Championship tomorrow, with the Lakers needing to string two consecutive victories together to win the title. Brockport was the lone SUNYAC to defeat Cortland this season.
