ITHACA, N.Y. – In the Big Red Invitational, hosted by Cornell University, The College at Brockport women's gymnastics team had a solid showing against NCAA Division I competition.
The Golden Eagles went toe-to-toe with Division I powerhouses Cornell and Bridgeport University, and Division III rivals Ithaca College. Cornell won the meet with a score of 194.450 with Bridgeport taking second with a score of 193.225. Brockport turned in a 189.550, with Ithaca rounding out the four teams with a 189.150.
Head coach
John Feeney had some fresh faces in the Big Red lineup, with several Golden Eagles stepping up on the big stage. The Green and Gold started the meet on the bars, with
Jen Sklenar the Golden Eagles' top finisher. The senior scored a 9.375 to tie for 13th, while
Marla Thomas was right behind in 15th (9.350) and
Allison Hester's routine earned a 9.125.
On the beam, the Golden Eagles had two top-ten finishers, with
Erica Roth leading the charge, taking sixth (9.750) and
Taylor Keough placing eighth (9.700).
Maddie O'Braitis notched a 9.550, with
Rachel Gurgiolo and Sklenar each scoring a 9.300.
Brockport turned in its highest score of the meet on the floor, with Sklenar leading the way with a season-high 9.850.
Stephanie Mager wasn't far behind, taking eighth, with a 9.775. Three Golden Eagles tied for 11th, with
Kayleen Burns, Keough and
Bridgette Schaal each scoring 9.725's.
Casey Sullivan rounded out the floor routines, scoring a 9.650.
Finishing on one of their strongest events, the Green and Gold posted a soaring final score, taking first as a team on the vault. Mager earned a 9.775, earning third overall in the event. Sullivan and Sklenar captured sixth, with vaults of 9.700 with Schaal taking ninth with a 9.675.
For the second time this season, and in her collegiate career, Sklenar competed as an all-around gymnast, scoring a 38.225 overall.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action in their final home meet of the regular season, the annual Stick it to Cancer meet on Feb. 19. The dual meet against SUNY Cortland will also serve as the Green and Gold's senior meet, with the senior members of the squad honored in a ceremony following the meet.
