BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's gymnastics team hosted the 2017 NCGA East Regionals on Sunday, and earned the title of NCGA East Region Champions, with a team score of 191.850.
The Golden Eagles advance to the 2017 NCGA National Championships, hosted by the University of Wisconsin – Stout on March 31 and April 1. Ursinus College, who placed second with a team score of 189.450 and Springfield College, who finished third with a score of 188.825 also earned their way to the NCGA National Championship. SUNY Cortland took fourth with a score of 186.975, Ithaca College placed fifth with a score of 185.525 and Rhode Island College finished in sixth with a 179.100.
Head coach
John Feeney's squad, who earned the No. 1 seed, started the day on the bars, where they notched a team score of 47.500 on the event, taking five of the top ten slots. Brockport was led by
Meghan Cash and
Maddie O'Braitis, who each turned in bar routines of 9.550 to tie for fifth place overall.
Caitlin Elsadek scored a 9.500 for seventh, with
Marla Thomas earning eighth with a 9.475 and
Jen Sklenar scoring a 9.425 for ninth.
On their next event, the beam, the Green and Gold worked for a team score of 46.500, led by the defending national champion on the event,
Candis Kowalik, who scored a 9.650 for second overall. Sklenar added a 9.550 to place fourth while
Kendal Hamer turned in a 9.150 to finish in 14th.
The Golden Eagles came out strong in their next event, notching a team score of 49.050 on the floor, sweeping the top three spots.
Brittany Vasile led the way with a near perfect 9.900 for first, while Kowalik wasn't far off with a score of 9.875 for second. Sklenar notched a 9.825 to finish in third, with Keough scoring a 9.750 for seventh and Cash turning in a 9.700 for eighth.
Bridgette Schaal rounded out the top six with a score of 9.700, for 11th overall.
Brockport finished their meet strong, vaulting a team score of 48.800, taking the top three spots in the meet.
Stephanie Mager's vault led the way, earning her first place overall, with a score of 9.850. Kowalik wasn't far off, with a score of 9.800 for second place, while Sklenar notched a 9.775 for third. Schaal added a 9.700 for fifth place while Vasile (9.675) and
Casey Sullivan (9.550) rounded Brockport, placing seventh and 15th respectively.
Sklenar had a strong all-around meet, earning her the title of meet All-Around Champion, with a score of 38.575.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on March 31 on day one of the NCGA Gymnastics Championships.
