BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's basketball team will be hosting SUNY Cortland this Friday for an important State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest, but this game will also be the annual "We Back Pat" game, honoring legendary Tennessee women's basketball coach Pat Summitt.
Pat Summitt coached the Tennessee Volunteers to eight national championships between 1974 and 2012, winning 1,098 games in the process, the most of any college basketball coach in NCAA history. The legendary coach was forced to retire at age 59 after being diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease, and passed away in June of 2016 at the age of 64.
This will be Brockport's second season hosting a "We Back Pat" game, as the Golden Eagles continue to join women's basketball programs from all over the country to raise awareness of Alzheimer's disease. There will also be opportunities for fans and supporters to donate, either through direct donations or a 50-50 raffle. All funds will be donated directly to the Pat Summitt Foundation to help defeat Alzheimer's disease.
Brockport head coach
Corinne Jones is excited for the opportunity to help support a cause that is near and dear to the entire basketball community.
"Hosting a "We Back Pat" game is a great way for our program to raise awareness of Alzheimer's disease along with honor a legend of our sport," said Jones. "Pat Summit paved the way for women's basketball and publicly fought to defeat Alzheimer's disease. We are honored to play and raise money for such a great cause and woman!"
