Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport baseball team is ready to start its 2020 season down in Ferrum, Virginia this upcoming weekend against Ferrum College and Alfred State. It all kicks off at 1 pm on Friday against Ferrum College.
Saturday features a doubleheader with a 12 pm matchup against Alfred State and a 3:30 pm game with Ferrum. Sunday closes out the opening weekend with an 11 am start versus Alfred State.
Brockport is looking to have a bounce back year after finishing the 2019 campaign with an overall record of 16-20 and a SUNYAC mark of 6-12. The team aims to get back to the SUNYAC Tournament after missing the cut last season. 2020 marks the 13th season for Head Coach
Justin Beach as the leader of the Green and Gold.
The Golden Eagles are bringing back plenty of returners such as senior outfielder
Tom Kretzler who led the team in runs (29), SLG% (.519), OPS (.932), touched bases (68) and home runs (7). Kretzler was one of three members of last year's team to earn 2
nd-Team All-SUNYAC recognition.
Leading the way on the mound will be senior
Trevor McCarthy who finished last season with a 3.20 ERA over a team high 56.1 innings pitched. McCarthy had a record of 3-5 with nine starts on the mound, and led the pitching staff with 40 strikeouts on the year.
Brockport welcomes many new faces this year such as Nick DeBrino,
Seth Burnham,
Jake Sisto,
Chris Perich,
Adam Lupo and
Andrew Huffman. Freshman pitchers Justin Delvechhio and
Thomas Roefaro are also new additions to the roster.
Coach Beach shared his thoughts about heading into 2020. "A lot of new faces, although with 11 seniors there's going to be a lot of opportunity for players to step up and compete in an always competitive SUNYAC Conference. As always, our season goal is to continue to work hard and continue to get better every day, while playing the best baseball towards the end of the year and make deep runs in the SUNYAC and NCAA Tournaments."
The Golden Eagles open the season up this weekend and continue to play some early season games through late February to early March. Starting on March 15
th, the team will be competing in the Russ Matt Invitational down in Florida for the week. Brockport's first taste of SUNYAC play will come right after the trip down south with games against Cortland on March 21
st and 22
nd. March 26
th will mark the team's first home game of the season, as RIT comes to town for a 3:30 pm start. Conference play begins to take over throughout April, as Brockport will fight to play in May, with the SUNYAC Tournament scheduled for May 7
th.
Up next for Brockport is a trip to Union, New Jersey for a matchup with Kean University on February 28
th. That game is scheduled to begin at 3 pm. The team will also face Bard College the very next day starting at 11 am.
