Brockport, NY -- Last night on ESPN's flagship program SportCenter, hosted by Scott Van Pelt, the SUNY Brockport Men's Basketball team was recognized during the Senior Night segment.
Summarizing the idea of Senior Night, Jake Russell from The Washington Post wrote the following: With the sports world at a standstill, ESPN's Scott Van Pelt found himself searching for answers. The measures being taken to prevent the spread of the coronavirus are for the benefit and safety of each program, but they resulted in a high number of high school and college athletes who won't get to see their amateur careers all the way through.
Van Pelt took to Twitter, where he has more than 2 million followers, tweeting: "So many college and HS athletes saw their seasons, maybe their playing careers, just....end. No send off, no nothing. We want to fix that. Share their stories, photos & videos here. We should certainly have the room for some join the show. Let's celebrate them #SeniorNight."
In the final week of celebrating Senior Night, the Brockport Golden Eagles spent some time in the national spotlight to honor what an incredible season they had on the hardwood. Seniors Justin Summers, Tyler Collins, Monte Stroman, and Darius Townsend were all given a shoutout on the show as well.
Brockport finished the year with a record of 26-3 overall, 17-1 in the SUNYAC, and an undefeated 15-0 mark on its home court. The 26 wins ties the second highest single season total in program history. Earning 17 wins in conference play is a program-best, since the league made the switch to 18 conference games a season in 2009. With their last loss coming on January 10th, the Golden Eagles rattled off 19 consecutive wins to tie the all-time program record. A win in the 2020-21 season opener will set a new program record.
The Golden Eagles were set to host the Tufts University Jumbo's for an NCAA Division III Sweet 16 matchup, until the COVID-19 outbreak led to play being suspended indefinitely.
