Last Time Out: The Golden Eagles were dominant against Fredonia in their last doubleheader, winning both games by scores of 15-2 and 17-2. In two games the team rattled of 42 hits, including 10 extra base hits, and stole nine bases without getting caught stealing once. Thanks to the two wins, Brockport is now 3-1 overall and 2-0 in SUNYAC West play which puts them on top of the divisional standings early in the season.
Leading Off: James Houlahan played the lead off role nearly perfectly against Fredonia, going 7-for-9 at the dish with six runs scored, two RBIs, and a double. In game one he connected for four hits in six at-bats, which led him to scoring four runs. He continued playing well through game two, with a 3-for-3 line with the bat on his way to scoring twice more. The leadoff batter leads the Green and Gold in runs scored (6), hits (9), and at-bats (17). Houlahan is currently batting .529 and owns a .556 on base percentage.
Swinging Away: Tied for second on the team in hits with eight each,
Ryan Mansell and
Nicholas Pastore have provided strong production with the bat in their hands. Mansell is batting .500 and leads Brockport with four doubles to go with his three RBIs. Pastore has racked up four RBIs, two triples, and owns a .471 batting average.
Matt O'Dair is also batting .500 for the Golden Eagles, connecting for six hits in 12 plate appearances while also going 3-for-3 on stolen bases.
Going Yard: Jake Sisto and
Ryan Voight have both knocked in seven RBIs already this year, and have done so with help from the long ball. In the first game of the season, Sisto hit two home runs for Brockport to bring in four RBIs in a win against Oneonta. Voight decided to go yard in game two against Fredonia for his first homer of the year.
On the Mound: Andrew Huffman and
Tom Kretzler are both 1-0 on the mound for Brockport this season. In two starts Huffman has struck out 11 batters and only allowed one earned run to score to secure a 1.50 ERA. Kretzler sat down seven in his only start this season and holds a 1.80 ERA so far. The two starters have combined for 11 innings pitched and have only allowed four total runs to be scored while the ball is in their hands.
Relieve Pitching: Kyle Canavally (1-0) has been the top relieve pitcher so far, putting up seven strikeouts in 3.2 innings of action. Canavally,
Matt McGowan,
Colin Pytlak,
Brandon Greenspan,
Nicholas Lawlor,
Justin DelVecchio, and
Kobie Punchard have all got the job done when called upon. Between these seven pitchers from the bullpen that have taken the mound this year, only two earned runs have been given up by the relievers in 13.2 total innings of work.
Looking at Oswego: Since matchups against St. John Fisher and Ithaca College have been postponed/cancelled, Saturday's doubleheader with Brockport will be Oswego's first action of the 2021 season. The Lakers were 6-3 overall in 2020 prior to the COVID-19 shutdown and finished 2019 with a 29-14 overall mark and 14-4 in the SUNYAC.
Up Next: The Golden Eagles are back home again for their next matchup, as they take on Fredonia for the second time this season. Playing at Clark V. Whited Complex, this SUNYAC doubleheader will begin at 1 pm.
