Baseball Preps for its Spring Trip with Stops in North Carolina & Florida

BROCKPORT, NY – The SUNY Brockport baseball team well venture down south this upcoming week to play in North Carolina on Friday, March 11th in a double header against William Peace University at the USA Baseball Complex. Following the brief stop in North Carolina, the team will then journey down to Auburndale, Florida where they'll compete at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational in seven games against six different teams.

Season Start Recap:
 
Vs. New Jersey City Gothic Knights
The Golden Eagles (1-1) started out their season back on February 26th and 27th in New Jersey against New Jersey City University and Kean College. Brockport opened the season with a big 8-1 victory over New Jersey City before falling in its second game 4-0 to Kean University.
 
Against the New Jersey City Gothic Knights, Andrew Huffman (1-0) got the start on the mound, throwing 4.1 innings to rack up eight strikeouts. Justin DelVecchio was given the ball in the fifth, as he struck out seven of the ten batters, he faced in just 2.2 innings of work. Cooper Meldrim also had a strikeout in the season opener, pitching two full innings in the win.
 
Tom Kretzler was 1-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs and one run scored. Ryan Mansell was a problem on the bases, stealing three bases in the contest and scoring three runs. Ryan Voight hit the only extra base knock of the day for Brockport, going 1-for-5 with an RBI double in the second.
 
Nicholas Pastore was 1-for-2 and drew two walks as the second batter in the lineup on Saturday. Pastore scored two runs, stole a base, and was credited with an RBI in the contest. James Houlahan also had an RBI on the day thanks to a sacrifice fly out in the third inning.
 
Vs. Kean Cougars
Tom Kretzler (0-1) got the start on the mound in the Golden Eagles second game of the season going 5.1 innings, throwing 70 pitches, allowing three runs, and striking out four batters while not allowing a single walk.
 
The Golden Eagles record two hits in Sunday's game with James Houlahan and Sam Law picking up a single for each of them. Law's hit came in the top of the third to left field while Houlahans hit occurred in the top of the eighth. Brockport picked up three walks in the game while Ryan Voight managed to swipe a bag and steal second base
 
NCAA Statistics:
SUNY Brockport is currently tied for having the 20th lowest earned runs average (ERA) where through 17.0 innings the teams combined for a 2.65 ERA giving up five earned runs. The teams are currently tied with eight other teams across Division III baseball for the best fielding percentage with a perfect 1.000%.
 
Looking at the Competition
 
William Peace University
On the team's first stop of its spring trip, Brockport will stop in Cary, North Carolina just west of Charlotte to face off in two seven-inning games against the William Peace University Pacers (8-4) at the USA Baseball Complex. The first game is schedules to begin at 11:00am
 
The Pacers leading batter through the first 12 games of the season has been Patrick Rogan who's posted a .417 batting average with 15 hits through 36 at-bats. He's hit a total of six doubles, two triples and one home run for six runs batted in (RBI's) and eight runs. He has an on-base percentage of .447% and a slugging percentage of .778%. He's also 5-for-5 on stolen base attempts.
 
Philip Berger (2-0) has been leading ace for the Pacers where in four starts in five appearances he's pitches 25.1 innings and posted a 3.91 ERA. He's thrown one seven inning complete game which saw him give up one hit and 10 strikeouts against Elmira College. so far, he's allowed 25 hits, 13 runs, 11 earned runs, six walks and put up 30 strikeouts to his seasons resume. He has also given up two doubles and one single against 94 batters who are posting a .266 batting average against the junior pitcher.


Stevenson University
In the Golden Eagle's first game at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational in Auburndale, Florida, Brockport will face Stevenson (4-9-1) on Sunday, March 13th at 6:00pm at Lake Myrtle Field #6.
 
Through the first 14 games of the Mustangs season, junior Pitcher/Outfield Trevor Smoot has posted a .415 batting average through 43 at-bats where he's put up 18 hits, one double, four RBI's and scored seven runs. Through 4.0 IP, Smoot has posted a 4.50 ERA while allowing six hits and two runs, both of which were earned.
 
Cameron Nebel (1-2) has gone 14.2 IP for the Mustangs where he's given up 16 hits, 13 runs, nine earned runs, five walks and tallied 13 strikeouts during his three starts on the mound. The freshman current has a 5.52 ERA with a 7.98 K/9.
 
University of Maine at Presque Isle
With an off day on Monday, Brockport will play The UMPI Owl's (0-2) on Tuesday March 15th at 4:30pm at Lake Myrtle Field #5. The Owl's started off its season with two losses to Colby College losing game one of the double header 6-0 and dropping game two by a score of 11-2.
 
Payton Jones leads the time in batting average where in five plate appearances hes recorded four at bats, one hit, two RBI's and one total base.
 
Steed Outler (0-1) leads the Owl's pitching staff with a 7.50 ERA where through six-innings he's allowed seven hits, six runs, five earned runs, two walks and five strikeouts allowing two doubles having faced a total of 24 batters.
 
University of Wisconsin-Superior
On Wednesday, March 16th the Golden Eagle's will compete against The University of Wisconsin-Superior YellowJackets (0-4) lin a double header with the first game scheduled to start at 3:15pm on Lake Myrtle Field #2.
 
Isaac Fugere is leading the YellowJackets offense with a .400 batting average through 10 at-bats having scored two runs, four hits, one double and one RBI through four games. He posts a .500 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .455%
 
Ryan Rodriguez (0-1) has been one of the key starters for Wisconsin-Superior where he's recorded a 2.62 ERA with a WHIP of 1.22. his 10.2 IP leads the teams and over that span he's given up 12 hits, six runs, four earned runs, one walk and tallied 12 strikeouts.
 
Stockton University
On Thursday, March 17th, Brockport will battle the Stockton University Ospreys (3-2-1) at Lake Myrtle, Field #6 at 10:15am.
 
Through 21 at-bats, John Perrino of the Osprey's is hitting a .476 batting average consisting of 10 hits, one double, one triple, five runs and five RBI's. He's received four base-on-balls and with an on-base percentage of .538% and a slugging percentage of .619%.
 
Through a team leading 13.0 IP, Mike Schiattarella (1-1) has recorded a 1.38 ERA allowing eight hits, two runs, two earned runs, two base-on-balls and 24 total strikeouts after facing 45 total batters. Against Schiattarella batters are averaging a .178 average against him.
 
SUNY Canton
The Golden Eagles will play against the SUNY Canton Kangaroo's (0-6) at 9:30am on Friday, March 18th at Lake Myrtle Field #1. The Kangaroos have started off their season winless through six games where they most recently dropped three games in a row to SUNY Oneonta by scores of 13-2, 9-1 and 9-2.
 
Nathan Welch currently leads the Kangaroo's in at-bats with 16 as he's posted a .313 batting average on five hits and one run with a slugging percentage of .313 and on-base percentage of .500%.
 
On the hill, Dylan Allen (0-1) has pitched a team high 8.0 IP holds a 9.00 ERA, 1.75 walks and hits per inning pitched (WHIP), giving up 10 hits, eight runs, four base-on-balls, two doubles and a triple through 38 batters, punching out nine of them. Allen also leads the team in batting averages amongst batters meeting the minimum requirements with a .444 batting average in nine at-bats with four hits and one double with four RBI's.
 
Simpson College
On the final day of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational, Brockport will take on Simpson College (2-1) at 9:15am at Lake Myrtle Field #6. The Simpson College Storm earned two wins over Carthage at Topeka, Kansas. by scores of 8-1 and 17-8 before falling 14-10 to Gustabus Adolphus College.
 
Through the first three games of the season, Brady Held posts the team's best average where in nine at bats he's recorded five hits, six runs, one double along with four RBI's. he currently has a batting average of .556 with an OBP of .643% and a SLG% of .667.

Chase to 300
With an overall record of 297-229-1, Brockport's head coach Justin Beach is three wins shy of hitting 300 total wins for his career. He will have a chance to hit 300 wins over the teams spring trip where they will play in a total of nine games in Carry, NC at the USA Baseball Complex and in Auburndale, FL at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
