Brockport, NY – The SUNYAC released its yearly award winners and all-conference selections on Wednesday for men's basketball.
Devante Hagins was voted as the Defensive Player of the Year and freshman
Mekhi Beckett was chosen as the Rookie of the Year.
Jahidi Wallace was named First-Team All-SUNYAC for the second straight season,
Mekhi Beckett earned Second-Team All-SUNYAC, and
Devante Hagins took Third-Team honors.
Senior
Devante Hagins finishes his career with Defensive Player of the Year and Third-Team All-SUNYAC added to his list of accomplishments. He is now a two-time all-conference selection. He led the SUNYAC this season with 73 total steals, which ranked 14
th in the nation. Averaging nearly three steals a game and 4.8 rebounds, Devante also was third in the conference with 37 blocks. The forward was also a playmaker on offense, leading the team with 87 assists on the season. Hagins completes his time at Brockport seventh all-time in blocks and inside the top 20 for career steals.
In his freshman campaign,
Mekhi Beckett had an impressive season which resulted in him being named the SUNYAC Rookie of the Year and Second-Team All-Conference. He was top ten in the conference in scoring, averaging 14.1 points a game. Beckett shot 79.6% at the foul line this year which was top five in the SUNYAC. He shot 39.1% from beyond the arc which was fourth in the conference. Mekhi is the second Brockport player to win Rookie of the Year in the last three seasons. He recorded double digits in 18 of the 24 games he played in, including his career-high of 25 points against New Paltz.
For his second straight season,
Jahidi Wallace has earned the status of First-Team All-SUNYAC. Averaging 15.4 points per game, he is the team's leading scorer and is ranked seventh in the conference. Wallace also led the Golden Eagles on the glass with a mark of 5.8 boards per game. He shot 49.8% from the field, 40.6% from deep, and 74.7% at the foul line for the year. He led the SUNYAC in both free throws attempted and free throws made, drawing contact to earn 154 attempts at the line.
Brockport finished the year 18-8 overall and were 12-6 in the conference during the regular season. The team defeated Potsdam in the first round of the SUNYAC Tournament, but was eliminated by Oneonta in the semifinals to conclude the year.
