BROCKPORT, NY – The SUNY Brockport baseball team is looking to play in two non-conference games this week first hosting RIT on Tuesday, April 12th at 4:00 pm at the Clark V. Whited Complex. The Golden Eagles will then travel to Aurora, NY to face off against the Wells Express on Wednesday, April 13th with the first pitch set for 3:30 PM.
SUNYAC Series Recap: The Golden Eagles dropped a SUNYAC series matchup to the #6 SUNY Cortland Red Dragons over the past weekend. Brockport managed to win 1 out of 3 games against the nationally-ranked Red Dragons.
The team's one win over Cortland came in game two on Friday, April 8th with a score of 3-1 where
Tom Kretzler (4-1) became the hero in the second game with his work on the mound and a clutch hit late. He pitched seven innings, allowed one run, and struck out two batters.
Matthew Colucci was credited with a save in this one. Tied at 1-1 in extra innings, Kreztler connected for a two-RBI double to put Brockport up 3-1.
Ryan Voight went 2-for-3 at the dish with a double and one RBI for the Green and Gold.
Ryan Mansell also rattled off a double in the contest, batting 1-for-3 with one run scored.
Zach Eldred also went 1-for-3 in the final game of the set.
Justin Pangburn and
James Houlahan each came around to touch home plate once.
Team leaders: Leadoff hitter
James Houlahan is leading the team with a .360 batting average with 27 hits in 75 at-bats.
Nicholas Pastore ranks second on the team with a .324 batting average on 24 hits in 74 at-bats with five doubles, four triples, and two home runs. His four triples are one shy of tying the school's all-time single-season triples record.
Tom Kretzler is the team leader in home runs as he's hit five so far this season adding to his career-high total now at 26. He's batting with a .302 average with 26 hits in 86 plate appearances.
Andrew Huffman (5-1) leads the team in innings pitched with 35.2 innings and a 2.02 ERA. Kretzler holds a 1.87 ERA through 33.2 innings and
Matt McGowan a 3.65 ERA through 24.2 innings pitched.
Justin DelVecchio and
Adam Douglas have been two of the main relievers in the Brockport bullpen. DelVecchio has thrown 11.1 innings with a 2.38 ERA while
Adam Douglas holds a 1.74 ERA through 10.1 innings in relief.
Matthew Colucci holds the teams only save of the season as he has not allowed a run to score through 8.1 innings out of the pen.
National Statistics: The Golden Eagles currently rank fourth in the nation Strikeouts-to-Walk Ratio (3.77) and WHIP (1.18). the team also has the fifth most shutouts (5) in Division III baseball and the sixth-lowest combined ERA (2.98). the team also records the ninth-lowest Walks Allowed Per Nine Innings (2.70).
Looking at RIT: The Golden Eagles faced the Tigers less than a week ago in Rochester, NY on April 6th which saw the Brockport win by a score of 12-5. Kretzler finished the day going 3-for-6 with three RBIs, three runs scored, a triple, and a home run in that game.
Brockport was pitched by the committee in the midweek non-conference contest as seven different pitchers toed the rubber for the Golden Eagles.
Colin Pytlak pitched 2.0 scoreless innings and struck out one, while senior
Adam Douglas added 1.2 innings of work and struck out two.
Matthew Colucci added 1.2 hitless innings of work and struck out two and
Justin DelVecchio closed the door in the ninth with one strikeout.
Cooper Meldrim,
Nick Lawlor, and
Nick Ianniello also saw time on the mound for Brockport.
John Bagley and Christopher Colella lead the Tigers (15-9) as both have a .333 batting average. Bagley has 23 hits in 69n at-bats with four doubles, two triples, and 17 RBIs. Collela has currently collected 17 hits in 51 at-bats with six doubles and eight RBIs. on the mound, Alex Slotter (2-1) is the team's best pitcher and holds a 2.16 ERA where through 25 innings pitched, he's recorded six earned runs, nine walks, and 24 strikeouts. Jon Opalewski leads the Tigers in strikeouts punching out 47 batters with Collin Reformat coming in second with 31 strikeouts this season.
Looking at Wells: The Express (6-18) were recently swept by Penn College in three straight conference games as the Wildcats outscored Wells 34-5 in three games. The Express is currently 2-9 in the NEAC. Max Odum comes into the Wednesday game with the best bat for Wells as the sophomore is hitting .372 with 32 hits in 86 at-bats and seven doubles and three triples with 17 runs and 15 RBIs. Zach Cronk holds the team's best ERA with a 6.11 earned runs average. In 35.1 innings on the mound, he's allowed 54 hits, 30 runs, 24 earned runs, and 11 walks with 31 strikeouts and a 7.90 K/9.
