Box Score 2 Union, NJ – On Sunday the Golden Eagle baseball team began the 2023 season with a pair of games against Kean and Misericordia. They start the year 0-2 after a, 3-1, loss to Kean and a, 2-0, loss to Misercordia.
Brockport 1, Kean 3 – Final
In the bottom of the first inning, Kean got on the board first to go up 1-0 early. After a single to get on base, a 2-out double brought the runner in to score the first run of the day.
Brockport answered in the top of the second, as
Zach Eldred brought a teammate in to score and tie the game at 1-1.
Nicholas Pastore hit a single, but was able to advance to third on an error. Eldred hit a sacrifice fly to score Pastore from third base.
Johnny Genau also singled in the second inning and was able to advance to third base as well. However, the Golden Eagles couldn't bring him in to score, ending the inning still tied at 1-1.
Another RBI double for Kean in the bottom of the third gave the team a 2-1 advantage. Looking to even the score once again, Brockport's
Patrick Bigham singled to lead off the fourth. Avoiding a double-play, Pastore reached first on a fielder's choice, but Bigham was thrown out at second.
Pastore stole second to get into scoring position, but was stranded on third a few batters later to end the inning. The Cougars would add to their lead in the bottom of five, thanks to an RBI single up the middle. They took a 3-1 lead into the top of the sixth inning.
Brockport would go on to leave four more runners stranded on the base paths in the final few innings. Neither team would bring in another run, as Kean snuck away with a 3-1 victory.
Colin Pytlak (0-1) started on the mound for the Green and Gold. He threw three strikeouts in 4.1 innings, and allowing three earned runs.
Matthew Colucci stepped onto the field in relief, going 3.2 innings with five strikeouts.
Kean's Nolan Rowan (1-0) got the win as the starting pitcher. He went for 6.0 innings on the way to allowing just one unearned run to score. He was relieved by Collin Kiernan who earned the save after 3.0 innings of work to close the game.
Brockport 0, Misericordia 2 – Final
In the second game of the double-header Brockport took on the Misericordia Cougars.
In the bottom half of the first inning, Misericordia threatened to score early after a runner stole third base with just one out. However, the threat was neutralized with two quick outs as the Cougars left the runner in scoring position stranded.
Brian Tietjen hit a 2-out single to get Brockport's bats going in the top of the second. That would be as far as he got though, getting stuck on first when the inning ended. Two walks put the Cougars in position to score in the bottom half of the inning.
With runners on second and third, Misericordia capitalized with a single up the middle. The hit brought both runners in to score, putting the team up 2-0. The Cougars had a chance to add to the lead, but they stranded two runners on base to end the inning.
Tietjen and
Ryan Mansell both singled in the top of the fifth inning, looking to get the Golden Eagles on the board. However, they grounded into a double-play to end the inning which put an end to the scoring threat.
Brockport had hits from
Johnny Genau and
David Belsito late in the game, but no runs came from the action. Neither team would get on the board again after Misericordia's 2-run inning in the second. The Cougars held on for the 2-0 shutout win.
Matt McGowan (0-1) got the start for the second game of the day, pitching for 4.1 innings and allowing two earned runs.
Justin DelVecchio entered the game as the mid-reliever, pitching 3.0 innings.
Adam Douglass threw for 0.2 innings to close out the game. McGowan and DelVecchio combined for five strikeouts on the day.
Joe Valenti (1-0) went the full 9.0 innings for the Cougars, getting the complete game shutout. He struck out five batters to pick up his first win of the season on the mound.
The Golden Eagles are back on the road next weekend for a trio of matchups. They travel to Salem, VA to face Roanoke College, Franklin and Marshall, and #8 Marietta.
