Field Hockey Heads to Keuka for Season Opener

Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport Field Hockey team will begin the 2023 campaign at Keuka College on Friday, September 1st at 4pm. Following the season opener, the Golden Eagles will host Nazareth College on Wednesday, September 6th at 6pm for their home opener.

2022 Recap: The Golden Eagles finished 9-7 in 2022, improving from their 2021 mark of 7-8. They secured 5 wins in shutout fashion in matchups against Keuka College, Elmira, Morrisville, Medaille, Oswego. Brockport narrowly missed a birth into the SUNYAC Tournament at 2-4 in the conference, finishing one game behind New Paltz for the 4th and final playoff spot. Last year's squad collected three All-Conference selections as Bailey Lazore, Paige Thowe, and Emmalee Moore all earned 2nd-Team nods.

Full Time: Head Coach Krista Archambeau, returns for her 7th season with the Golden Eagles, recently receiving a promotion making Archambeau the first full-time head field hockey coach in Brockport history. "This is a promotion we've been working towards, and we're excited to see it come to fruition this Fall," said SUNY Brockport Athletic Director Erick Hart. "Coach Archambeau has proven over the course of the last six seasons that she is an excellent leader both on and off the field. She is a great fit to guide our field hockey program to the next level and we're excited to bring her on in a full-time role this year."  Archambeau has led the Golden Eagles to both of the team's winning seasons (2019, 2022) since 2011.

The Staff: Taylor Weber joins the staff for the 2023 season as a student coach following two seasons as a member of the Brockport Field Hockey program, where she recorded five goals in 2022. Katie Ziemba and Emily Hall return to round out the group, bringing a wealth of coaching and playing experience to the Golden Eagle coaching staff.

Preseason Poll: The SUNYAC conference released the 2023 Field Hockey preseason poll on Wednesday, August 23rd. Brockport lands at 5th following a 5th place finish in the SUNYAC in 2022.

Elevated Expectations: When asked regarding the roster makeup and expectations for the 2023 season, Coach Archambeau shared her thoughts... "We have a strong mix of returning impact players that are stepping up and doing a great job leading our new players, the team is working hard and performing more as one unit every day. Our goal is to improve from the previous season and finish in the top 4 of our SUNYAC conference". This year's team will feature 13 returners from last season, including nine juniors and a pair of fifth year players.

Familiar Faces: The Golden Eagles return their top five point scorers from 2023, including 2nd-Team All-SUNYAC selections Emmalee Moore and Paige Thowe.  Brockport will also return the goalie tandem of Ella Buchanan and Katelynn Banning that ranked second in the SUNYAC in saves (131) and save percentage (.814). Banning will look to improve following a solid freshman year where she made seven appearances, two starts, allowed just three goals, made 16 saves, and had a perfect 2-0 record. Buchannan was the primary option between the pipes for Brockport as a sophomore. She accumulated 105 saves across 13 starts and over 800 minutes of game action, posting a solid record of 7-6.

Far From Finished:  Forward Bailey Lazore will return for another year in the Green and Gold following her best season as a Golden Eagle. She led Brockport in goals (9) and total points (19) in 2022. Lazore was rewarded for her big year with a 2nd-Team All-SUNYAC selection, the first of her career. Graduate Student Jillian Owens will also return for a fifth season, providing veteran experience and stability on the defensive end for the Golden Eagles. She made nine starts for the squad, making three defensive saves last year.

Rounding Out the Roster: The Golden Eagles welcome six new players as part of the 2023 freshman class, consisting of Autumn Kramer, Emma Redanz, Maggie Sullivan, Sophia Jones, Skye Exware, and Madison Kirkpatrick.

The 2023 sophomore class of Kalena Eaton and Katelynn Banning both look to build on their work last year as freshmen.

Nine juniors finish out the 2023 roster for the Golden Eagles, including Kelsey Zehr, Paige Thowe, Emmalee Moore, Quinn Guy, Tiffany Andres, Mary Young, Abby Chalmers, and Ella Buchanan.

Poised for a Breakout: Freshman Kalena Eaton started 11 games in her first season in Green and Gold, making an instant impact with 11 points on the year. Eaton dished out five assists that had her tied with Tiffany Andres for the team lead. Gianna Salerno improved significantly from her freshman year, increasing her scoring production from three goals in 2021 to seven in 2022. Salerno totaled a solid 15 points, good for second on the team last season.

Scouting Keuka: Keuka College finished the 2022 season 6-13 overall with a 4-5 record in Empire 8 play, earning the sixth seed in the Empire 8 Tournament. The postseason run came to an end for the Wolves after falling to the third seed from Houghton, 4-1. Brockport has maintained dominance in the head-to-head series with Keuka, winning all 11 matchups since 2006. This includes last year's 11-0 win at home for the Golden Eagles to start the 2022 season.

Scouting Nazareth: The Golden Flyers finished the 2022 campaign 4-15 with a 4-5 mark in Empire 8 play with their season concluding with a 4-3 overtime loss to Keuka College. Brockport came away victorious with a tight 2-1 win over Nazareth in last year's matchup. The head-to-head series has been a competitive one with both schools splitting the last 8 meetings since 2014.

Up Next: The Golden Eagles will begin a 3-game road trip following the home opener against Nazareth on September 6th at 6pm. They begin the journey with a non-conference road matchup against RPI on Saturday, September 9th at 3 pm.
