BROCKPORT, NY - The Brockport Women's Basketball team will host St. John Fisher on Friday, January 9th at 2 PM before matching up with Nazareth for Youth Basketball Day from The Vlog on Saturday, January 10th at 2 PM.
Last Outing: The Golden Eagles opened conference play in dominate fashion, downing Elmira at home, 75-55, on Tuesday, January 6th. Brockport improved to 5-5 overall and 1-0 in Empire 8 play following the win.
Brianna Carey provided her best outing as a Golden Eagle, leading all scorers with a season-high 19 points on excellent 7-of-8 shooting from the floor. Carey added three steals and two assists in a dynamic 19 minute effort for the Green and Gold.
Stephanie Jean-Baptiste put on a defensive masterclass, snatching a season-high five steals to go with 11 points and two assists. With her 11 point outing, SJB has scored 11+ points in each of her nine games played on the season.
Ten different Golden Eagles would score in the contest, with seven different players finishing with five more points. Brockport finished the contest with 20 steals, leading to 31 Soaring Eagle turnovers.
Claire Turner (6PTS) and
Josie Wray (3PTS, 2STL) each led Brockport with six rebounds each.
Showing Out: Setting a new career-high in points against Elmira (19),
Brianna Carey has emerged a key two-way threat for the Green and Gold. Averaging 12 PPG, Carey has scored 12+ points in five of her last six outings. The Mechanicville, NY native has been just as effective defensively, snatching a team second-best 20 steals.
Elite Shooting: Leading the Golden Eagles in scoring the last three seasons,
Stephanie Jean-Baptiste has evolved into a efficient volume shooter. Scoring a conference second-best 18.6 PPG, SJB holds the fifth-best field goal percentage (43.9%) in the conference despite attempting the fourth-most shots (65) amoung Empire 8 players. Across nine games, Jean-Baptiste is on pace to set career-bests in PPG (18.6), RPG (5.8), steals (24), and blocks (5).
Creating Havoc: Forcing a season-high 31 turnovers against Elmira, the Brockport defense has stayed ahead in the turnover battle throughout the season. The Golden Eagles are averaging a conference second best 22.5 turnovers forced per game while only giving up 16.1 turnovers per contest. Four Golden Eagles have averaged two steals per game or better, including
Stephanie Jean-Baptiste (2.7),
Peyton Maneri (2.4),
Mandy Brink (2.0), and
Brianna Carey (2.0).
Scouting St. John Fisher: The Cardinals hold a 4-6 overall record and 1-0 mark in Empire 8 play, defeating Alfred 46-41 on Tuesday to open conference play. The Golden Eagles will enter Friday's contest looking to snap a four game losing streak in the head to head series.
Scouting Nazareth: The Golden Flyers have rolled to a 8-3 start, most recently defeating Houghton on Tuesday to improve to 2-0 in Empire 8. Brockport will be looking to secure its third straight victory against Nazareth, defeating the Golden Flyers 93-86 in the Empire 8 Tournament Semifinals last season.
