BROCKPORT, N.Y. — Riding momentum from an undefeated two-game week, the SUNY Brockport field hockey team returns home to Dr. Linda Arena & Class of '69 Field for an Empire 8 clash against St. John Fisher University on Wednesday, October 7th, at 7 p.m. The Golden Eagles enter the contest sitting 4th in the Empire 8 standings with an 8-2 overall record and a 2-1 mark in conference play.
Week Recap
Brockport delivered a perfect week, taking care of business in non-conference play before grinding out an overtime conference road victory to push its overall record to 8-2 (2-1 E8).
The Green and Gold kicked off the week on Tuesday with an energetic 6-2 home victory against SUNY Morrisville during their Pediatric Cancer Awareness Game. After falling behind early,
Cassidy Pado leveled the score before halftime. Brockport's attack erupted in the second half behind game-winning plays from
Penelope Schalck and
Elise Brady, who each netted two goals and an assist, while
Alexis Penree added a tally and
Laela Osinski dished out two assists. Freshman goalkeeper
Julia Nieboer shined in her first career collegiate start, racking up 10 saves to secure the win.
Brockport carried that momentum into Friday's Empire 8 road battle at Russell Sage College, pulling off a thrilling 2-1 comeback win in overtime. Trailing 1-0 at the half,
Alexis Penree scored her fourth goal of the season in the third quarter off a pass from
Makenna Hart to tie the game. Brockport dominated tempo and shots (19-11), forcing extra time where
Penelope Schalck converted a penalty corner setup from
Emily Nestor at the 62:15 mark to bury the game-winner.
Lauren Mastromarco recorded six saves in cage to lock down the conference victory.
Schalck Named Empire 8 Co-Offensive Player of the Week
Freshman attacker
Penelope Schalck was recognized as the Empire 8 Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Monday following her clutch performances in Brockport's 2-0 slate.
The Medina, NY native was central to the Green and Gold attack, striking for three goals across two games—highlighted by securing the game-winning goal in both contests. She started her week with a five-point showing against Morrisville (2G, 1A) before providing the game-ending score in the 63rd minute of overtime at Russell Sage. Schalck currently paces the Green and Gold in goals (7) and total points (16) while ranking fifth overall in scoring among Empire 8 leaders.
Scouting St. John Fisher
The Cardinals make the trip to Brockport sitting at 4-6 overall with a 1-1 mark in Empire 8 action. St. John Fisher is looking to rebound after dropping a tight 1-0 contest to Marywood University in its last outing. The Golden Eagles haven't found success in the win column against the Cardinals since 2012 and look to snap the skid on home turf to stay near the top of the conference standings.
Up Next: Following Wednesday's matchup, Brockport will remain at home to continue Empire 8 conference play, hosting Keuka College on Wednesday, October 14th, at 4 p.m.
