BROCKPORT, NY - On Monday, March 23rd, the Empire 8 Conference announced
Blake Fortunato as the Baseball Rookie of the Week. The standout shortstop from Deposit, NY, earned his second weekly honor following a strong performance over a five-game stretch in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
Currently leading the squad in batting average (.350), slugging percentage (.550), RBIs (17), and hits (21), Fortunato's consistency was on full display for the Green and Gold. Providing a multi-hit performance against #3-ranked Johns Hopkins, Fortunato would cause havoc in Brockport's Empire 8 opening sweep of Keuka College.
Across Friday's doubleheader against Keuka, the Brockport shortstop would finish three-for-nine at the plate with six RBI's and two runs scored. In game two against the Wolves, the freshman would smash his first home run of the season, driving in one of his three RBI's in game two. Fortunato would be just as strong in game three, closing out Brockport's action in Florida with a two-for-four outing with two RBI's and a triple.
On the week, Fortunato finished with a .333 batting average with eight RBI's, four runs scored, and two extra base hits, coming from a triple and a home run. The freshman has made an immediate impact for the Golden Eagles, leading the squad in nearly every statistical category.
Brockport currently holds a 5-13 overall record with a 3-0 mark in Empire 8 play and will head to the University of Rochester on Tuesday, March 24th, at 4 pm.
