Box Score Troy, N.Y. — The SUNY Brockport women's flag football team (2-1, 1-0) made a strong statement in its first-ever Empire 8 Conference contest on Friday afternoon, earning a 26-12 road victory over Russell Sage. The win marks the program's first conference triumph and lifts the Golden Eagles above .500 early in their inaugural season.
Brockport's offense operated at a high level throughout the game, outgaining the Gators 354-227 in total yardage. The Golden Eagles were especially dominant on the ground, rushing for 184 yards at an average of 7.7 yards per carry.
Balanced Attack Powers Brockport
The Golden Eagles relied on a balanced, dual-threat offensive approach that kept the Sage defense off balance all afternoon. Quarterback Megan Gerber led the charge, totaling 120 passing yards and 110 rushing yards while accounting for all four Brockport touchdowns. Gerber has totaled 10 touchdowns across her first three outings, with seven passing and three on the ground.
Madison Beardsley added over 100 all-purpose yards, completing 7-of-15 passes for 50 yards and adding 51 rushing yards on 10 attempts.
Brockport set the tone early, building a 12-0 lead in the first quarter. Gerber opened the scoring with a touchdown run at the 7:15 mark, then connected with Hannah Roxstrom on a touchdown pass to extend the advantage. Caitlynn Haugh emerged as a key target in the passing game, hauling in a touchdown reception and finishing with a team-high four catches for 51 yards.
After Sage responded with a pair of second-quarter scores to even the game at 12-12, Brockport quickly regained control. Gerber added another rushing touchdown and converted the one-point try to give the Golden Eagles a 19-12 lead heading into halftime. She capped the scoring in the third quarter with another rushing touchdown and successful conversion, extending the lead to 26-12 and putting the game out of reach.
Defensive Stand Seals the Win
Brockport's defense delivered a dominant performance in the second half, holding the Gators scoreless over the final two quarters. Brooklyn Gaurnier led the effort with eight solo flag pulls and a pass breakup, while Karina Rohevenko made her presence felt in the backfield with five solo pulls, including three tackles for loss, and a pass breakup.
Fatima Ahmed added a sack for an 11-yard loss, and Hannah Roxstrom came up with a key fourth-quarter interception to halt a potential Sage comeback. Cymbri Jefferson contributed five solo flag pulls, while Ariana Kennedy recorded three, including one for a loss. Lauren Cundra anchored the secondary with two pass breakups.
Up Next: The Golden Eagles return home on Tuesday, March 31, at 6 p.m. for the program's inaugural home opener at Bob Boozer Field.
