Brockport, N.Y. – The Empire 8 announced on Monday, March 30, that Ben Yerina has been named Co-Pitcher of the Week. The honor follows a dominant complete-game performance by the sophomore for the Golden Eagles.
A native of Burnt Hills, New York, Yerina earned his first weekly conference recognition after tossing a complete-game shutout against the University of Rochester Yellowjackets.
Yerina set the tone from the opening pitch, needing just 93 pitches to complete nine innings of scoreless baseball. He struck out six batters while issuing only one walk, effectively limiting the Yellowjackets throughout the outing. The performance marked his third appearance this season with five or more strikeouts and his first career scoreless outing.
In his first season of full-time action, Yerina has emerged as one of Brockport's top pitchers. He currently leads the team in WHIP (1.14), ERA (4.26), and opponent batting average, holding opposing hitters to a .223 mark.
The Golden Eagles enter the week with a 7–13 overall record, including a 3–0 mark in Empire 8 play. Brockport returns home Wednesday, April 1, at 3 p.m. to host the Houghton Highlanders in its home opener.
