Baseball Begins Busy Week of Conference Play at Houghton

Brockport, N.Y. — The Brockport baseball team (7-13, 3-0 E8) opens a busy week of conference competition on Wednesday, April 1, traveling to Houghton (8-6, 2-3 E8) for a 4 p.m. first pitch. The Golden Eagles will then travel to Elmira (9-6, 1-4 E8) for a three-game series beginning Friday, April 3, at 3 p.m., before concluding the weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 4, with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.

Regional Statement:
Brockport secured two significant regional victories last week, shutting out Rochester, 9-0, and defeating SUNY Oneonta, 9-4, in non-conference play.

Matthew Coon paced the Golden Eagles offensively, recording four hits (4-for-7), two RBIs, two walks, and one run scored. Coon, who has hit two home runs and driven in 18 runs this season, is currently riding a team-best nine-game hitting streak and has reached base safely in each of his last 15 games.

Graduate student Michael Norton also delivered a strong performance, tallying four hits (4-for-8), four RBIs, and three runs scored. Ranking second on the team with a .950 OPS, Norton showcased his power with a double and a triple in the win over Rochester. Norton and freshman Blake Fortunato led the offense against Oneonta, combining for six RBIs and accounting for over 88 percent of the team's scoring.

James Dixon continued his productive season, posting five hits (5-for-10), four RBIs, and two runs scored on the week. His top performance came against Rochester, where he went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and one run scored.

Josh Indek remained a consistent presence at the top of the lineup, recording three hits (3-for-5), including a double against Rochester. He added another hit and a run scored against Oneonta.

On the mound, sophomore Camden Schaffer (W, 2-1) turned in his strongest outing of the season against Oneonta, tossing seven innings with seven strikeouts while allowing just two earned runs. Over his last 18.1 innings pitched, Schaffer has allowed only seven earned runs while striking out 20 batters.

Bryce Tyndell closed the door against Oneonta with a scoreless ninth inning, extending his streak to seven consecutive scoreless innings and marking his third straight scoreless appearance.

E8 Pitcher of the Week:
Following a dominant performance against Rochester, Ben Yerina was named Empire 8 Co-Pitcher of the Week. Yerina threw a complete-game shutout, requiring just 93 pitches to cover nine innings. He struck out six and issued one walk while limiting Rochester throughout the contest. The outing marked his third appearance this season with five or more strikeouts and his first career scoreless outing. Yerina currently leads the team in WHIP (1.14), ERA (4.26), and opponent batting average (.223).

Scouting Houghton:
Houghton enters Wednesday's contest following a 19-9 (seven innings) loss to Russell Sage on Monday. The Highlanders have dropped three straight games after previously sweeping Alfred in a doubleheader on March 21. Brockport and Houghton have met six times since 2018, with the Highlanders seeking their first win in the series.

Scouting Elmira:
Elmira is currently on a four-game losing streak, most recently falling to Utica, 12-1, on Sunday. Brockport has won all four meetings between the programs since 2019.
