Brockport, N.Y. — The Brockport baseball team (15-13, 11-0 Empire 8) will host Houghton (11-12, 3-9 Empire 8) for its home opener on Tuesday, April 14, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
Last Week
The Golden Eagles extended their winning streak to 13 games with a perfect 4-0 week. Brockport opened with a 9-4 road victory over St. John Fisher before completing a three-game sweep of SUNY Poly over the weekend.
On the mound against St. John Fisher, Brockport relied on a two-pitcher effort to secure the win. Ben Yerina (W, 3-2) struck out six over 4.2 innings, allowing two earned runs, while Nick Ianniello (S, 1) closed the game with 4.1 scoreless innings. After a challenging start to the season, Ianniello has emerged as a key bullpen arm, allowing just two earned runs over his last four appearances (10.0 IP, 1.80 ERA) with six strikeouts.
In Saturday's 3-2 extra-inning victory over SUNY Poly (12 innings), the Golden Eagles' pitching staff combined for 21 strikeouts. Camden Schaffer set the tone with eight strikeouts over five innings (2 ER), followed by 2.2 hitless innings from Tyler Arno, who struck out four to keep the game tied. Brendan Pajak (W, 1-0) was dominant in relief, striking out nine over 4.1 scoreless innings to help force extras and earn the win.
In the top of the 12th inning, Cole Grazioplene delivered the decisive blow with an RBI single to score Evan Brock, lifting Brockport to the victory.
Offensively, Michael Norton led the way in Sunday's DH opener against SUNY Poly, going a perfect 5-for-5 with an RBI, three doubles, and a stolen base. He finished the series 8-for-15 and now leads the team with a .366 batting average.
Tyler Pohlman (W, 3-2) earned the win in game one, striking out a career-high 10 batters over 6.2 innings while allowing four hits (3 ER). Bryce Tyndell (S, 1) secured the save with 2.1 scoreless innings, striking out four.
In game two, Kyle Blake paced the offense with three hits, including two doubles, and four RBIs, along with one run scored.
Hitting Streak Watch
Matthew Coon enters Tuesday's contest riding a 17-game hitting streak, one of the longest in recent program history. The streak is the longest since 2023, trailing only Zach Eldred's 27-game record-setting run last season. Coon is tied for the team lead with five home runs and leads Brockport in both OPS (1.058) and slugging percentage (.615), establishing himself as the team's top power threat.
Scouting Houghton
Houghton enters the matchup following a three-game sweep at the hands of Keuka College last weekend, dropping to 3-9 in conference play. Brockport has controlled the all-time series in recent years, winning each of the last seven meetings since 2018, including the last three by margins of 10 runs or more.
