Brockport, N.Y. — The Brockport baseball team (20-17, 16-3 E8) returns home this weekend to close out the regular season with a pivotal three-game Empire 8 series against Utica (20-14, 11-8 E8). The series opens Friday, May 1 at 3 p.m. with the program's Morgan's Message Game for Mental Health, before the Golden Eagles celebrate Senior Day with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
Senior Day
Before the start of Saturday's doubleheader, Brockport will honor 11 seniors in recognition of their dedication and contributions to the program. Nick Mahar, Connor Furst, Steven Merkel, Thomas Browne, Josh Indek, Michael Norton, Matthew Coon, Connor Villano, Brendan Pajak, Jack Gobin, and Nick Ianniello will be recognized in a pregame ceremony.
Offensive Surge
The Golden Eagles enter the weekend in strong form, posting a 3-1 record over their last four contests. Brockport's offense has been especially dominant, scoring 10 or more runs in each of those games. Over the last 30 innings, the Golden Eagles have produced 73 runs while limiting opponents to just 19, showcasing one of the most explosive stretches of the season.
Seeing Red
Matthew Coon continues to pace the Brockport lineup, leading the team in nearly every major offensive category. The graduate student has reached base in 30 consecutive games, one of the longest streaks in program history, and sits just one game shy of tying Zach Eldred's program record 27-game hitting streak. Coon's breakout campaign includes a conference-leading nine home runs, along with top-five Empire 8 marks in total bases (87, 3rd) and slugging percentage (.707, 4th).
Heating Up
On the mound, Tyler Pohlman has established himself as one of the premier pitchers in the Empire 8. The junior has logged 34 innings in conference play, the third-highest total in the league, while leading the conference in both wins (5) and strikeouts (36). Pohlman has allowed just eight runs—fourth fewest in the conference—and carries a 2.20 ERA, ranking third. His performance has been instrumental as Brockport enters the final weekend of the regular season.
Empire 8 Outlook
Both programs have already secured berths in the Empire 8 postseason tournament, with Brockport currently holding the No. 2 seed. The Golden Eagles can clinch the No. 2 seed with a victory on Friday and remain in contention for the Empire 8 Regular Season Championship with a sweep of Utica, coupled with three Russell Sage losses.
Scouting Utica
Utica enters the series as the No. 4 seed in the conference standings and rides a three-game winning streak into the weekend. Brockport has historically held the upper hand in the matchup, winning all four meetings between the two programs dating back to 2010.
Up Next
Following the conclusion of the regular season, Brockport will turn its attention to the Empire 8 Tournament, which begins Thursday, May 7.
