Baseball Splits Senior Day DH Against Utica

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BROCKPORT, N.Y. — The Brockport Golden Eagles baseball team celebrated Senior Day at the Clark V. Whited Complex on Saturday, earning a split in an Empire 8 doubleheader against the Utica University Pioneers. After dropping the opener in a high-scoring 12-7 contest, the Golden Eagles responded with a 9-5 victory in the nightcap to move to 21-19 overall, including a 17-5 mark in conference play, to close out the regular season. The split keeps Brockport firmly in contention atop the conference standings while honoring a senior class that has played a pivotal role in the program's recent success.

Game One: Utica 12, Brockport 7

In the first game of the doubleheader, Utica's offense found its rhythm early, spoiling the initial Senior Day festivities. The Pioneers capitalized on early scoring opportunities to build a lead, forcing the Golden Eagles to play from behind for much of the contest. Despite the deficit, Brockport showed resilience at the plate, continuing the high-powered offensive production that has defined its late-season push.

Matthew Coon was a bright spot offensively, leading the team with three runs scored, while Steven Merkel contributed an RBI double and scored twice. Nick Mahar added a two-RBI double in the fifth inning to cut into the deficit, and Quinn Mahoney chipped in with a pair of RBIs.

The Golden Eagles totaled seven runs but were unable to keep pace with a Pioneers lineup that produced 18 hits. The contest remained competitive through the middle innings before a late surge by Utica created enough separation to secure the 12-7 result.

Game Two: Brockport 9, Utica 5

Brockport responded in game two behind a dominant start from Camden Schaffer and an aggressive approach on the basepaths to earn the split. Schaffer (4-3) delivered an outstanding performance on the mound, striking out 10 batters over 7.0 innings while allowing just three earned runs. His command and composure limited the Pioneers' offensive opportunities and provided a steady foundation for the Golden Eagles.

Offensively, Nick Mahar led the way, finishing 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the seventh inning to extend the Brockport lead. Evan Brock produced a strong performance in the middle of the lineup, driving in three runs, including a two-RBI single in the fourth inning that gave the Golden Eagles a lead they would not relinquish. Cole Grazioplene added to the effort by scoring three runs while contributing a stolen base and a sacrifice fly.

Matt Mayer also recorded a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a stolen base to maintain offensive pressure. Brockport's small-ball execution proved critical, as the team stole eight bases and capitalized on six Utica errors to pull away in the later innings. James Dixon added a double and scored twice, while Matthew Coon recorded two hits to help secure the victory.

Up Next

With the regular season complete, Brockport now turns its attention to postseason play. The Golden Eagles will open Empire 8 Championship action on Thursday, May 7. The official opponent and first pitch time will be announced later this evening following the conclusion of conference play.
