BOXSCORE
Senior
Sarah Petrie (Oswego, NY/Oswego) knocked in the game-winning goal with 14 seconds remaining in the first overtime to give The College at Brockport women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over New Paltz at A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field on Saturday.
Brockport (6-3-1, 2-2-0 SUNYAC) dealt New Paltz (8-3-1, 3-1-0 SUNYAC) its first conference loss and moved their SUNYAC record to the .500 mark.
The Golden Eagles had the game's first great scoring chance about halfway through the first half. Sophomore
Katie Gildemeyer (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) brought the ball up the right side of the field, then fed a touch pass to junior
Kaila Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) who found freshman
Maria Malone (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) streaking down the middle of the field. Malone's shot was denied by Hawks goalie Stephanie Vega.
The Golden Eagles had another great look at the goal with just under six minutes left in the half. Maguire fed junior
Courtney Belding (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili), but Belding's strike was knocked away by Vega.
Brockport continued to control the tempo in the second half. The Golden Eagles out-shot their opponents 22-10 in the contest, and 12-1 in the second half alone.
Junior
Sarah Lawson (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) subbed into the game a few different times and her presence was felt each time. With 25 minutes left, Lawson got on a breakaway and hit a shot from the right side that was headed for upper corner of the near post, but Vega came up with another stop.
With 11 minutes left, the Golden Eagles had a breakdown in their own box, but were able to scramble and deny a few chances from the Hawks. Brockport mustered one more scoring opportunity in regulation, but junior
Gina Laing's (Holland,NY/Holland) shot was stopped by Vega and the game moved to overtime.
In overtime, New Paltz generated the first scoring chance off a corner kick. Hawks junior Emily Rokitowski gathered a corner served by Rebecca Rothman and sent a shot into the lower left part of the net. Brockport goalie
Erin Asquith (Arcade, NY/Pioneer) made a diving to save to extend the game.
With under a minute left, Lawson got a step on the right side of the field and crossed a ball to the far post. Petrie went up for the ball and pushed it by Vega and a defender with 14 seconds left for her first goal of the year and a win for the Golden Eagles.
"I think that's the first time all season that I've felt we dominated a game," head coach
Joan Schockow said. "The team really rebounded from yesterday's loss."
Asquith recorded six saves in her fourth shutout of the season. Vega registered 10 stops in a losing effort for New Paltz.
Brockport hosts its next home game on Tuesday at 4 pm against Canton at A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field.
