Women’s Soccer Earns Comeback Win

Golden Eagles score two unanswered goals in victory

Sarah Lawson scored her first goal of the season in Saturday's win
BOXSCORE

Senior Amanda White (Feura Bush, NY/R-C-S) and junior Sarah Lawson (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) both tallied goals for The College at Brockport women's soccer team in a come from behind 2-1 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win on Senior Day at A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field on Saturday afternoon.

Brockport (8-5-1, 3-4-0 SUNYAC) improved its chances for the postseason with the win, while Oswego (8-7-0, 2-6-0 SUNYAC) fell further behind the Golden Eagles.

Before the game, eight Brockport seniors were recognized for their contributions to the team.

Five minutes into the contest, the Golden Eagles earned their first good chance at goal, when junior Kaila Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) received a through ball at the top of the box. Her shot, however, traveled wide left of the net.

The Lakers had a look of their own with 17 minutes left in the first half. Junior Shelly Bateman played a through ball to sophomore Nikki Liadka, but Brockport senior goalie Erin Asquith (Arcade, NY/Pioneer) came out and stopped Liadka's run.

Oswego opened the scoring at 31:58 into the game, when Bateman netted her sixth goal of the year. Senior Laura Ambron found Liadka with a pass, which Liadka headed to Bateman at the edge of the box. Bateman turned, took one dribble, and buried a shot over the head of Asquith for the 1-0 Oswego lead.

The Golden Eagles answered in the 44th minute, when White cracked a shot from outside the box on the right side that beat the goalie on the far post. Maguire was credited with an assist on White's third marker of the year.

The game was tied at one at halftime.

Brockport scored its second unanswered goal just over a minute into the second half. Lawson played a short pass on a corner that Maguire gathered and sent right back to Lawson. The junior then took a shot from the right side that got by Oswego goalie Emily Varonier, giving the Golden Eagles a 2-1 edge they would not relinquish.

Oswego's best chance to tie the game came with under 31 minutes left, when Liadka beat a defender in the middle of the field and raced to the goal. The sophomore fired a shot from just inside the box that went wide left. The Golden Eagles defense locked down the Lakers for the rest of the game to earn the win.

“Oswego jumped out early on us with the first goal, but the team responded incredibly well,” head coach Joan Schockow said. “Two quick goals gave us the lead and we got an important win to honor our seniors.”

Asquith finished with four saves in the win for Brockport. Varonier registered six stops in a tough loss for the Lakers.

The Golden Eagles travel to Potsdam on Friday and Plattsburgh on Saturday, as they look to garner a SUNYAC postseason spot.
