BOXSCORE
The College at Brockport women's soccer team overcame a one-goal deficit in the first half of their conference opener to defeat host Buffalo State 2-1 in a game that was delayed for about an hour due to thunder on Friday. With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 5-1-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the SUNYAC. The Bengals fall to 4-4-0 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play.
All three of the game's goals were scored in the first half, but the Bengals struck first in the fifth minute when a cross from the last side was deflected into the net by a Golden Eagle defender. Less than two minutes later, senior
Amanda White (Feura Bush, NY/R-C-S) put home a corner kick served by junior
Sarah Lawson (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) to tie the game at one.
"This was one of our better games against Buffalo State over the years," said head coach
Joan Schockow. "It is nice to start the SUNYAC season with a win, now we need to focus on tomorrow (against Fredonia)."
Buffalo State out-shot Brockport 16-7 in the game and 7-2 in the first half, but it would be an own goal that would give the Golden Eagles the win. In the 17th minute, a Bengal defender tried to clear the ball over the endline, but found the back of her own net, giving Brockport the lead for good.
The second half was scoreless, but play was stopped in the 87th minute because of lightning. The game resumed an hour later, and the remaining 3:07 was played.
Senior
Erin Asquith (Arcade, NY/Pioneer) finished the game with three saves in goal in a winning effort. Buffalo State goalkeeper Virginia Porten also registered three stops in net.
Brockport travels to Fredonia on Saturday to play the Blue Devils at 1 pm.
