BOXSCORE
Two early goals by The College at Brockport women's soccer team proved to be enough in a 2-0 victory over St. John Fisher on Wednesday afternoon at A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field.
Junior Gina Laing (Holland, NY/Holland) got the scoring started for the Golden Eagles in the 10th minute when she fired a shot from outside the box that made it over Cardinal goalie Noel Peck's outstretched hands and into the net.
Minutes later, at 12:01 into the first half, sophomore Katie Gildemeyer (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) fed a cross to junior Kaila Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam), who was able to settle the ball in the box and put home her second goal of the year.
The St. John Fisher attack was efficient in the first half, but was unable to turn in any goals thanks to disciplined defense and excellent goaltending by Brockport. It was the second consecutive shutout by the Golden Eagles.
Senior goalie Erin Asquith (Arcade, NY/Pioneer) registered four saves in the first half, including stopping a sliding effort by Val Hanson with less than 10 minutes remaining in the half to preserve the 2-0 lead going into halftime.
The Cardinals sent out Jessica Plukas to play the second half in net, and she held Brockport scoreless for the rest of the contest. The Golden Eagles defense continued to swarm the ball, and the Cardinals were outshot 17-14 in the game. Brockport also earned eight corner kicks, compared to only one for the Cardinals.
“The home crowd got to see a lot of new faces in a nice win,” Brockport head coach Joan Schockow said. “St. John Fisher has some strong players, and we were just able to finish better today.”
Asquith (2-1) recorded her second shutout of the season, with six saves in the game. Peck (0-1) was dealt the loss, finishing with one save. Plukas also ended the game with a single save.
Next up for the Golden Eagles is a home game against Nazareth College at 2 pm Saturday.
