Box Score

The College at Brockport Women's Soccer team brushed off an early goal from Buffalo State and came away with a 3-1 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory. The Golden Eagles improve their unbeaten streak to 6-0-1 and 1-0 in the conference. Vanessa Gillette (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia) scored her team-leading fifth goal on the year for the game-winner.

Brockport gave up the first goal of the game, a rare occurrence for the Golden Eagles, having trailed in a game only one other time this season. Kaila Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) scored Brockport's first goal of the game at the 17:42 mark and Gillette took a long through ball to put Brockport up 2-1 late in the first half. Sarah Lawson (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) gave Brockport some insurance with just under eight minutes to play to seal the victory.

Maguire took matters into her own hands to put Brockport on the board. The senior dribbled through a crowd of defenders near the top of the Buffalo State box. Maguire drilled a left-footed shot, bending it just inside the left post and out of reach from the Buffalo State keeper.
The Golden Eagles continued to pressure for the next 20 minutes until Maria Malone (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) played a through ball from midfield to Gillette who outsprinted the Bengals defense. Gillette was able to beat Buffalo State's keeper who had come out to score her fifth goal of the season. Malone was credited with her first assist of the season.

Lawson provided the insurance with a strike from 25 yards out. Lawson's shot bounced off the crossbar, hitting the back of the Bengals keeper and into the net. The senior has now had at least one point in Brockport's last four games.

Apart from the early goal, the Brockport defense had another exceptional game. The Golden Eagles, anchored by sweeper Brittany Lee (Olean, NY/Olean) has allowed just five goals in seven games the season. Sophomore Laura Thompson (Victory, NY/Victor) earned her sixth victory of the season. Thompson needed to make only one save on the night as Brockport outshot the Bengals 15-5.

The Golden Eagles have now won five of the team's last six SUNYAC openers, a feat head coach Joan Schockow praised after the game. “It's always great to open up SUNYAC play with a win” said Schockow. “To come out and win by multiple goals over a SUNYAC opponent is something we haven't done in awhile. We created a lot of chances today which really helped us.”

Brockport continues conference play tomorrow with a home contest against Fredonia. The Blue Devils are currently ranked No. 22 in the latest national rankings after dropping the No. 1 team in the country William Smith last week. Game time is set for 1:00 pm at A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field.
