Chelsea Stahl (Brockport, NY/Brockport) scored twice for The College at Brockport women's soccer team, but the Golden Eagles were defeated by Oswego 3-2 in the first minute of a second period of overtime during a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup on Friday afternoon at A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field.
Vanessa Gillette (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia) started things off quickly for the Golden Eagles, rifling a shot just inches wide of the net. A few minutes later, Katie Gildemeyer (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) had a chance to score after Gillette was able to draw the Oswego goalkeeper out and get by her. Gildemeyer tapped the ball that Gillette sent across the box, but it went just wide again.
Just before the 15 minute mark, Stahl scored the first goal of the game to give Brockport the advantage. Cayli Carmona (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) sent that ball in towards the box from the midfield and Stahl, stationed at the top of the box was there to lift it into the top of goal.
The Lakers answered back minutes later with a goal of their own to tie things up. Georgia Traynor capitalized on a free kick from the far left side of the field, slipping the ball in past Laura Thompson (Victor, NY/Victor).
At 28:50, Carmona came up huge for the Golden Eagles with a blocked shot that could have given Oswego the lead.
Both teams had opportunities to take the lead heading into halftime, but neither could find the back of the net.
Starting out the second half, Oswego had some early opportunities and was able to take the lead with a goal at 52:42.
Brockport fought throughout the rest of the half to tie things back up. Carmona had another good shot at 59:03 that went just wide and booted another one 10 minutes later that was saved.
Thompson came out and scooped up a ball, stopping the Laker offense from a scoring opportunity with under 20 minutes to play.
With time running out, Stahl struck again. She recorded her second goal of the game and tied things up with only nine minutes remaining in regulation.
In the first overtime, each team had scoring opportunities but once again could not find the finish needed. Gillette pulled the goalkeeper out of the goal, beat her and then crossed the ball in front of the net, but Carmona could not get a good touch on the ball as it wound up being blocked by a defender. Oswego turned around and almost scored a goal of their own after a collision between Thompson and a Brockport defender, but the Lakers shot went wide.
Oswego ended the game with a goal just one minute into the second overtime.
The Golden Eagles finished the game with a 25-18 advantage in total shots, while Oswego held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Brockport returns to action on Saturday to take on SUNYAC conference rival Cortland for a 1:00 pm game at A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field.
