Late push by the Golden Eagles not enough to overcome early deficit

Megan Usher scored the lone goal against the Cardinals
Box Score
Senior Megan Usher (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) scored late in the second half for the only goal by The College at Brockport women's field hockey team as the Golden Eagles fell 2-1 at St. John Fisher College.

The first half saw a lot of back and forth play between the Golden Eagles and the Cardinals. Jackie Massoni (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) had a great run up the field in the first few minutes of play, but had the ball taken off her right in front of the goal. The Cardinals answered back with a run of their own that resulted in St. John Fishers first goal at 24:44.
The Golden Eagles put pressure on around the 15 minute mark with three big penalty corners, but could not find the back of the cage.

Brockport came out in the second half looking to tie things up. With a few quick shots, the Golden Eagles put the pressure on. The Cardinals were able to weather the storm and added a second goal at 48:34.

Not ready to back down, the Golden Eagles kept pressure up on the Cardinal defense. Emily Corpin (Peterboro, NY/Morrisville-Eaton) ripped a shot from the top of the circle that Usher was able to collect the rebound from and slip the ball right past the St. John Fisher goalkeeper at 55:19.

With time winding down, Brockport continued to pepper the Cardinal defense with shots and corners. In the final four minutes, the Golden Eagles took seven penalty corners and eight shots, but could not come up with a goal.

Despite outshooting the Cardinals 23-7 and holding a 13-3 advantage in penalty corners, Brockport could not overcome the early deficit.

"Unfortunately, we started out a bit flat," said head coach Andrea Zurlo. "I thought we worked really well together in the second half, but not capitalizing on all the corner opportunities hurt us."

The Golden Eagles return to action at 11:00 am this weekend against Springfield College at the Springfield Tournament held in Springfield, MA.
