Volleyball Wins 10th Straight to Start 2015

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The College at Brockport Women's Volleyball team is on a torrid start to the 2015 season as it continued its excellent season with two more victories Saturday during the Golden Flyer Invitational. The Golden Eagles defeated Medaille in its first match of the afternoon prior to another 3-0 sweep of Hilbert, which brought its participation in the Nazareth invite to a halt.

Brockport (10-0) Head Coach Steve Pike credits the Golden Eagles depth for the strong start and says he is blessed to have multiple lineups that he is confident can compete if called upon to start. The Brockport depth proved troublesome for the opposition Saturday as the Golden Eagles fluctuated lineups between matches.

The Green and Gold won in straight sets versus Medaille by scores of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-17. Several Golden Eagles made outstanding impressions on the match, especially senior Ashley Capone. Capone finished the match second in kills with 10 but led the team with a .500 hitting percentage as the middle blocker only made two errors on 16 attempts. She also demonstrated her defensive expertise, leading the team with two solo blocked shots.

The reigning Brockport Female Athlete of the Week Noelle Poloncarz continued to spread the ball around evenly to her teammates, racking up 33 assists.

Medaille had one of the better attacking offenses that the Golden Eagles have seen all season, so the defensive effort was on full throttle. Kathleen Irwin, Aimee Spilman and Poloncarz all finished the match with more than ten digs apiece.

Two first year Golden Eagles, had significant impacts on the second match of the day for Brockport. Freshman Jamie Schlesinger and junior Mallory Sullivan had stellar performances. Schlesinger was the setter on the floor for Brockport against Hilbert and finished with 25 assists. She was also able to pick her spots to decoy the defense when she would attack the ball rather than set and finished the match with four kills to zero errors.

Sullivan also finished the match with four kills compared to zero errors and was also able to add three digs, two solo blocked shots and two assisted blocked shots with Schlesinger.

The service line again proved to be a big ally for the Golden Eagles during the Nazareth tournament. Brockport finished with 25 aces in the first day and added 16 more Saturday, including 12 against Hilbert. Leading the way for the Green and Gold were Rachel Fiser and Sydney Cowie with four apiece and Emily Flohr with three.

Flohr also led the Golden Eagle attack versus Hilbert finishing with 12 kills while overall on the day Kayla Barber led her teammates with 18 kills altogether.

Brockport returns to action on the road Tuesday against the University of Rochester at 7 p.m. Be sure to stay up to date on all your Golden Eagle scores and awards by following @BportAthletics on Twitter and by liking the "Brockport Golden Eagles" Facebook page.
