Sophomore Sarah Lawson's double-overtime goal lifts Golden Eagles

Sophomore Sarah Lawson's double-overtime goal lifts Brockport into ECAC Metro/Upstate title game
The College at Brockport moved one step closer to winning another Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) postseason soccer tournament thanks to a double-overtime goal from sophomore Sarah Lawson (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East).

The Golden Eagles (9-8-1 overall) captured the past two ECAC Upstate postseason tournaments, and this year, competing in the combined ECAC Division III Metro/Upstate tournament, Brockport made it to the championship game with a thrilling, come-from-behind, 3-2 win over top-seeded Richard Stockton College Saturday afternoon in Pomona, NJ.

Fifth-seeded Brockport will face second-seeded Drew University (14-7-1), a 2-1 winner over Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham, in the ECAC Metro/Upstate championship game at 1 p.m. Sunday back on the Richard Stockton campus.

The Golden Eagles took an early 1-0 lead in the third minute. Senior forward Jess Bushs (Dryden, NY/Dryden) scored her sixth goal of the year off a corner kick, with an assist from senior Abby Smith (Mexico, NY/Mexico).

After playing a scoreless rest of the first half, the Ospreys (13-8-2) responded with a goal in the 48th minute to tie it, and took a 2-1 lead in the 70th minute before the Golden Eagles rallied with some late-game magic.

Brockport head coach Joan Schockow switched sophomore defender Gina Laing (Holland, NY/Holland) from outside back to the outside midfielder spot, and Laing made the move pay off in the 87th minute. Laing made a nice run and converted her first goal of the year to tie it at two.

The teams played a scoreless first overtime period, before Brockport struck on the first scoring opportunity in the second overtime. Bush played a ball into Lawson who, from 35 yards out, struck a beautiful shot from the right side that sailed into the far portion of the goal to give the Golden Eagles the win just 1:29 into the second OT.

These players showed their resiliency today. They kept believing in themselves and you have to give them a lot of credit, Schockow said.

Once we got down, we kept pushing, and tied the game on Ginas nice goal. Then Lawson hits her shot from 35 yards out, that was a pretty cool goal.

Junior Erin Asquith (Arcade, NY/Pioneer) made eight saves to help the Golden Eagles advance.
