Junior goalie
Erin Asquith (Arcade, NY/Pioneer) made four saves for The College at Brockport Women's Soccer team in the championship game of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Metro/Upstate NY Women's Soccer Tournament, but a goal by Drew University in the first nine minutes of the second half was the difference as the Rangers topped Brockport 1-0 to win the tournament title.
The loss for Brockport (9-9-1) in the championship game was the first in three years as the Golden Eagles had won ECAC titles in each of the previous two years.
After a scoreless first half, Drew (15-7-1) converted a corner kick with 9:34 elapsed in the second half for the only goal of the game.
Brockport had scoring opportunities in the first half but could not find the back of the net.
"We had our chances to score today," said head coach
Joan Schockow. "There were a few shots that we could have scored on and just could not take advantage like we did yesterday (in the semifinal win over Richard Stockton) and it came back to bite us."
For Brockport, the loss caps a season with over a .500 record for the 20th consecutive year as the Golden Eagles finished at 9-9-1.
"We have heard a lot of compliments down here from people saying how hard our team worked," said Schockow. "Coming from the No. 5 seed in this tournament and beating the No. 4 seed and the No. 1 seed to get to the title game is a testament to how tough our team is. Fred (assistant coach
Fred Parker) and I are very proud of this team."
