BOXSCORE
The College at Brockport women's soccer team defeated Daemen College on Tuesday afternoon, as two own goals by Daemen gave the Golden Eagles the edge in a 3-1 win. With the victory, Brockport moves to 3-1-1 on the year. The Wildcats fall to 4-2-0.
Daemen quickly put the pressure on the Brockport defense, scoring in the fourth minute as Alicia Vasiloff won the ball at the end line and found Kelsey O'Leary in the middle of the box. O'Leary beat Golden Eagle senior goalie
Erin Asquith (Arcade, NY/Pioneer) with a well-placed shot.
The goal ended Asquith's streak of 307 minutes, 16 seconds without allowing a goal, but also fired up the Golden Eagles unit. Brockport out-shot Daemen 22-13 in a very physical game, where 15 total fouls were called.
In the 31st minute, a Wildcat defender tried to head the ball out of play, but unintentionally scored on her own net, knotting the game up at one apiece. The score would remain tied going into halftime.
A little more than halfway through the second half, Daemen's Lindsay Miller had a scoring opportunity nixed when she fired a shot from the 18-yard-box that Asquith was able to stop. In the 68th minute, sophomore
Katie Gildemeyer's (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) cross was knocked into the net by a Wildcat defender, giving the Golden Eagles a 2-1 edge.
The Wildcats had their best chance to tie with roughly 14 minutes left, as Rachael Banasik dribbled through two defenders and found herself one-on-one with the Brockport goalie. Asquith came out of the goal with a sliding challenge, forcing Banasik to strike her shot over the goal.
At 86:14 into the game, junior
Kaila Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) beat her defender on the left side of the field and raced toward the net. She fed a pass to fellow junior
Courtney Belding (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) in the middle of the box, and Belding found the open net for her first goal of the year, sealing the game for the Golden Eagles.
“Our play in the first 20 minutes wasn't stellar,” said head coach
Joan Schockow. “We put it together late in the first half and played good soccer. It was nice to see Courtney score a goal in her first game back from injury.”
Asquith recorded five saves in her third victory of the year. Daemen goalie Kayla Hampton registered eight stops in the contest.
Brockport hits the road this weekend, as they travel to Ohio to face Oberlin College on Saturday at 2 pm.
