Brockport, NY – The women's soccer team returns to action this week with a pair of Empire 8 conference matchups. The Golden Eagles will host Alfred University on Wednesday, September 30th at 4 pm at home before heading to Albany on Saturday, October 3rd to take on Russell Sage College at 4 pm.
Last Week Recap: The Golden Eagles went 1-0-1 last week, beginning with a 2-2 draw at SUNY Geneseo on Wednesday. Amelia Breton opened the scoring early for Brockport before Geneseo took a 2-1 lead into halftime. Elyssa Barnhart found the back of the net in the second half to even the score. Cameryn Childs made eight saves in goal as Brockport and Geneseo finished level.
Brockport returned home Saturday and earned a 4-1 victory over Keuka during Youth Soccer Day and the Morgan's Message Mental Health Awareness Game. McKenna Slate opened the scoring before Keuka tied the game late in the first half. The Golden Eagles responded with three second-half goals, including two from Amelia Breton and one from Madyson Whalen, to secure the win. Brockport finished with a 12-7 advantage in shots and improved to 6-1-2 overall and 2-0-1 in Empire 8 play.
Players to Highlight: Amelia Breton continues to lead the Brockport offense after another two-goal performance against Keuka. Breton enters the week with 11 goals on the season and has recorded 19 shots on goal through nine games. She has also recorded three game-winning goals.
McKenna Slate has added three goals and two assists, while Kaitlyn Spring has contributed two goals and two assists. Brianna Marino has recorded one goal and three assists, while Sophia Brooks has three assists on the season.
In goal, Emily McCane has made 31 saves through nine appearances and owns a .816 save percentage. Cameryn Childs has added 13 saves and a .813 save percentage while providing a strong presence in goal for the Golden Eagles.
Scouting Alfred: The Saxons enter Wednesday's matchup with a 1-5-3 overall record and a 0-3-1 mark in Empire 8 play. Alfred earned its first conference point of the season on Saturday after playing Utica to a 0-0 draw. Alfred opened the season with draws against Alfred State and Chatham before earning its lone victory against Hilbert, 2-0. The Saxons have since dropped games against Oswego, Fredonia, Houghton, St. John Fisher and Nazareth before earning the scoreless draw against Utica. Alfred has scored six goals through nine games while allowing 19. The Saxons will look to carry the momentum from Saturday's shutout into Wednesday's matchup with Brockport.
Scouting Russell Sage: The Gators enter the week with a 5-1 overall record and a 1-1 mark in Empire 8 play. Russell Sage opened conference play with a 2-1 victory over Keuka before falling to Elmira, 2-0, on September 16th. Russell Sage opened the season with five consecutive victories before suffering its first loss of the season against Elmira. The Gators have recorded wins over Mount Saint Mary, Manhattanville, SUNY Canton, Western Connecticut State and Keuka during their strong start to the season. The Gators will face SUNY Poly on September 26th before hosting Brockport on October 3rd. The Golden Eagles will look to continue their strong start to Empire 8 play when they travel to Albany for Saturday's matchup.
