Played one year of baseball with the Golden Eagles; later was a graduate assistant at his alma mater under coach Dick Bonalewicz; after earning two degrees in physical education from Brockport, has gone on to a long and successful career in professional baseball as a coach, manager and instructor; is most known for this three-year stint (2007-10) as manager of the Baltimore Orioles; after leaving Baltimore, served as the bench coach for the Houston Astros (2012-14) before taking on his current role as Director of Player Development for the Atlanta Braves; in addition to the Orioles, Astros and Braves, has worked for the Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates and San Diego Padres.

On numerous occasions in the past decade has welcomed the Brockport baseball team, as part of the team’s southern/spring break swing in Florida, to the complex where he is coaching.

Was a minor league manager for 20 years – often coming to Rochester in games against the Red Wings – winning more than 1,300 games; won two league titles and Manager of the Year awards three times; in 2001 named by Baseball America as one of minor league baseball’s top five managers of the previous 20 years; taught and coached high school baseball for three years and college baseball for five years before getting into the professional game.
