Was a three-sport performer at the College, which included a four-year swimming career for the Golden Eagles (1958-61)... In addition to being a two-year captain (1960-61), was a finalist in the New York State Collegiate Championships and was a qualifier for the Eastern Intercollegiate Championships at Harvard in 1960 and at Princeton in 1961... Held the freshman records in the 100, 220, and 440-yard freestyle, and the varsity records in the 50, 100, 220 and 880 yard freestyle... Also held the pool records for the 50 and 100 freestyle.
Following his career in the pool, he found a new home beside it at East Carolina University... During 35-year tenure at the University, he spent 15 years as the Head Coach of men's and women's swimming... Was awarded the fifteen-year service award from NCAA Division I in 1981, received the Distinguished Coach Award from the College Swim Coaches Association of America in 1982, and was the coach of the year in the Eastern Collegiate Swim Coaches Association in 1982 and of the Southern Conference in 1975... Was inducted into the East Carolina University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002.
Following retirement, he returned to swimming competitively in the Senior Games in 2007 and the US Masters... To date, he has 47 first place finishes in the NC Carteret County games, 32 top three finishes in the NC State Championships, and finished in the top ten in the 2009, 2011, and 2012 Senior Games and Masters National Championships.
