A three-sport athlete at SUNY Brockport, Ransbury participated in football, basketball and track and field. He also was a member of the leaders and officials club.
Ransbury began his professional career as a teacher and coach at various high schools throughout New York and New Jersey. He started his teaching career in elementary physical education with the Rochester City School District in 1955. The Silver Creek native returned to his hometown to serve as athletic director, as well as coach for football, basketball and track and field from 1956 to 1961.
In 1969, Ransbury assumed the rank of assistant professor at the University at Buffalo, where he also served as an assistant coach for both the football and basketball teams. He finished his teaching duties at Clarence Central School where he taught health and physical education - and coached football and freshman basketball. His coaching career continued at UB as an assistant football coach in 1986. Before retiring in 1989, he served as a part-time scout for the Buffalo Bills (1978-85).
