Cullen was a four-year varsity lacrosse and basketball player and a three-year tennis player. She was the co-captain of the varsity lacrosse team that participated in the AlAW nationals in 1975-76 and was the winner of the Ernest Tuttle Student-Athlete Award in 1975.
As a staff member at Penn State University-Scranton from 1977 to 1983, she coached basketball, volleyball, and tennis and was the recipient of the Penn State University Commonwealth Campus coach of the year award in 1982 for volleyball.
In addition to coaching successes, Cullen has earned several research fellowships, including the Marie L. Cams Physical Education Department Fellowship, the University of Wisconsin College of Education Fellowship, and the New Investigator Research Award granted by the Orthopedic Research Society in 1994.
